Smoak agreed to a two-year, $8.5 million contract extension with the Blue Jays on Saturday. The deal also includes a $6 million option for 2019.
EDGE Analysis
Smoak is a career .225 hitter against both lefties and righties and he is slashing just .234/.333/.402 with nine homers in 246 plate appearances this season. The Blue Jays are essentially extending a replacement-level player. With Edwin Encarnacion set to become a free agent at the end of the season, Smoak should continue to see plenty of at-bats in 2017 as the Blue Jays await the arrival of first base prospect Rowdy Tellez.
