Padres optioned LHP Josh Spence to Triple-A Tucson. With Tim Stauffer to be activated from the disabled list on Monday, San Diego needed to open a roster spot and did so at the expense of Spence. The 24-year-old southpaw posted a 4.35 ERA and 1.74 WHIP over 11 appearances after producing a 2.73 ERA and 31 strikeouts over 29 2/3 innings in 2011. He'll be back later this season.
