New York Mets third baseman David Wright could start a rehab assignment as early as Monday as he continues to recover from a back injury, according to ESPN New York. Wright, who began what will be a five-day stretch of rigorous baseball workouts Tuesday, will rest Sunday before embarking on a rehab assignment if he does not suffer any setbacks. The 32-year-old has not played since April 14 because of spinal stenosis, but he is nearing a return after receiving clearance to increase his activity level. “I’m planning on coming back and being an everyday player," Wright said. “It’s nice to be back in the grind again, rather than being secluded to the therapy room. It’s been a long process and I like the fact we’re finally talking about baseball and no rehab and doctors. You put in all this work to finally get to the point where you are now." Wright will need a handful of rehab starts before he returns, but he is on track to return sometime this month.
