With closer Jeanmar Gomez and Hector Neris unavailable due to rest, manager Pete Mackanin called upon Hernandez with a two-run lead in the ninth. The first three batters reached on a walk, single and double, which pulled the Reds within one. Hernandez induced a ground out and fly out against the next two batters, and Phillies outfielder Tyler Goeddel cut down Eugenio Suarez, who was trying to score on a sacrifice fly attempt, at home to end the game.
