Making his major-league debut on Wednesday, left-hander Duane Below allowed three runs (one earned) on five hits in five innings of Detroit's loss to the A's. He walked two while striking out one. His night was over when he served up a home run to Hideki Matsui to lead off the top of the sixth inning. All in all it was a good effort, however, and he'll almost definitely get another start next week, likely against the White Sox in Chicago.

Tigers recalled LHP Duane Below from Triple-A Toledo. As expected, he'll make the start Wednesday night against the Athletics. Below, 25, has posted a 3.13 ERA and 87/37 K/BB ratio over 115 innings at the Triple-A level this season. The southpaw has been particularly hot lately, allowing four runs over three starts this season.

Duane Below will start Wednesday against the A's. Below, a 25-year-old left-hander, has posted a 3.13 ERA and 1.18 WHIP in 115 innings this season for Triple-A Toledo. With a promising 83/37 K/BB ratio, he makes for a decent flier in deep AL-only fantasy leagues.

The Tigers have still not settled on a starting pitcher for Wednesday's game against the Athletics. "There are some candidates," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "But we haven't settled on anybody yet." Charlie Furbush and Duane Below seemed to be the most likely candidates, but Furbush pitched in relief for Triple-A Toledo on Sunday, ruling him out for Wednesday's start. That leaves Below as the probable option. The left-hander is 9-4 with a 3.13 ERA for the Mud Hens and 5-1 with a 2.60 ERA in his past eight starts.
