Craig Counsell reiterated Sunday that he won't consider returning to baseball. Counsell retired in January. After Alex Gonzalez was injured Saturday, some wondered if Counsell would reconsider. "I don't have plans to play," he said. The 41-year-old infielder was a .255/.342/.344 career hitter over more than 1,600 games. He was also part of two World Series championships.

Craig Counsell is retiring from baseball. Counsell opened this offseason with the intention of continuing his playing career, but a market for him never materialized and he was recently offered a position in the Brewers' front office. The 41-year-old infielder was a .255/.342/.344 career hitter over more than 1,600 games. He was also part of two World Series championships.

Brewers general manager Doug Melvin said Tuesday that he will not attempt to re-sign Craig Counsell. Counsell, 41, batted just .178/.280/.223 over 178 plate appearances with the Brewers this past season, including an ugly 0-for-45 funk. The veteran infielder intends to continue his playing career in 2012, but may have to accept a minor league deal in order to do it.

Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com reports that Craig Counsell intends to continue his playing career in 2012. Counsell this year had one of the worst seasons in recent memory, batting a hideous .178/.280/.223 while going through an 0-for-45 skid at one point. The 41-year-old at least offers some versatility, which might be enough for some team to bring him in for a bench role.

Craig Counsell singled in a run Monday for his first RBI since July 10. Counsell actually went hitless for the entire month of July, part of an 0-for-45 skid. Incredibly enough, this was the first time he drove in a run with a hit since May 8. He has five RBI in 132 at-bats this season.

Craig Counsell hit a pinch-hit single to shallow right in the ninth inning to snap an 0-for-45 stretch. In the process, he avoided matching Bill Bergen's notorious 0-for-46 mark set 101 years ago. "It's a relief just to do something right," Counsell said after the game. "It was just one hit, but it meant something to me." The 40-year-old's last hit came on June 10 during a 3-for-3 outburst. He is now hitting .153.

Craig Counsell flew out as a pinch-hitter Monday. Counsell now has zero hits in his last 45 at-bats and has watched his batting line plummet to .145/.235/.179. The Brewers are low on quality infielders but may need to cut the 41-year-old loose if things don't change soon.

The Brewers aren't considering making a roster move with struggling INF Craig Counsell. Counsell is batting just .173 on the season, and is 0 for his past 26. Set to turn 41 in August, Counsell is likely in the midst of his final major-league season.
