Cory Luebke will miss all of the 2014 season after it's been determined that he'll require a second Tommy John surgery on his left elbow. Luebke felt pain in the elbow back in September and was shut down, but he was able to throw from a mound with no issues a couple months later. However, an MRI last Friday revealed a re-tear of his ulnar collateral ligament, which means he's set to go under the knife again. "I feel bad for him . from 2011 through the first part of 2012, he was certainly on his way," said Padres general manager Josh Byrnes. "This is a real setback. There's been a lot of missed time. Hopefully in a year or so, he can get back to being Cory Luebke. This whole thing has been a mystery."

According to Corey Brock of MLB.com, Padres general manager Josh Byrnes is considering using Cory Luebke out of the bullpen to begin the season. The 28-year-old southpaw missed the entire 2013 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery. Byrnes indicated that they may play it safe as they ease him back into action, beginning the season in the bullpen to limit his workload, while building up his arm strength before transitioning to the rotation. While it's a great idea from the Padres perspective, it would severely limit Luebke's fantasy value for 2014.

Padres general manager Josh Byrnes said Tuesday that Cory Luebke (elbow) has "thrown off a mound a couple of times" recently. "Luebke's been good," Byrnes said. "He's thrown off a mound a couple of times, and he's probably going to come out to San Diego in a week or two and throw to some hitters." Luebke had multiple setbacks along the way in his recovery from Tommy John surgery, missing the entire 2013 season. The Padres are hoping he'll be ready to roll at the start of spring training.

Cory Luebke (elbow) will have his arm examined by orthopedic surgeon Dr. Tim Kremchek in Cincinnati this week. Luebke has been shut down three times in his comeback from Tommy John surgery, and the Padres want to get a handle on his situation going into the offseason. Manager Bud Black admitted to having some concern. "Anybody who's in this stage of a rehab and they're not over the hump, you always worry," Black said. "You're always worried, and in this case just because of the position he plays and the pain is near the same spot. There is probably a little bit more concern than in most cases."

Cory Luebke (elbow) threw a 25-pitch bullpen session Tuesday. It's the first time he's thrown off a mound since last May's Tommy John surgery. Luebke has had a few setbacks along the way and isn't expected to return this season. "He looked good and felt fine, so that's a great sign," Padres manager Bud Black said. "There's been a couple setbacks along the way and that happens, and today was a good sign. It's just another little step, there's still a lot of ground to cover."

Padres manager Bud Black said Thursday that it's "unlikely" Cory Luebke (elbow) and Joe Wieland (elbow) will return this season. It's unlikely that we will see them in a major league game this season," Black said of Luebke and Wieland. Both have had multiple setbacks in their recovery from Tommy John surgery. Luebke is throwing again, while Wieland is currently shut down with triceps soreness. They should be fine by spring training next year, but they're simply going to run out of time this season.
