Athletics recalled OF Collin Cowgill from Triple-A Sacramento. Cowgill appeared in 32 games with Oakland before losing his roster spot to injury in mid-July. He could push for a platoon behind Josh Reddick, but his role in September doesn't figure to be prominent.

Athletics activated OF Collin Cowgill from the 15-day disabled list; optioned him to Triple-A Sacramento. Cowgill completed his rehab assignment on Monday but the A's aren't prepared to bring him back to the major leagues. He was batting just .271/.343/.313 in 32 games before spraining his left ankle in late June.

Updating a previous item, Collin Cowgill was diagnosed with a Grade 2 sprain of his left ankle. Cowgill was spotted on crutches Saturday and could be looking at an extended absence. The Athletics haven't provided a timetable for his return. Brandon Hicks was promoted Saturday and is replacing him on the active roster.

Collin Cowgill went 0-for-4 in Tuesday's 5-0 loss to the Rangers. Like most of his teammates, Cowgill could not figure out Rangers starter C.J. Wilson. Nevertheless, Cowgill has not figured out most pitchers this season, as he sports a .128/.209/.128 batting line through 39 at-bats.
