Carlos Zambrano threw six scoreless innings in his start Sunday with High-A Clearwater. According to MLB.com's Adam Berry, Zambrano showed good command and touched 90 mph with his sinker. He's expected to make at least one more start before the Phillies consider him for a promotion. Zambrano can opt out of his minor league deal on July 1 if he hasn't been added to the 25-man roster.

Carlos Zambrano will need at least two more minor league starts before possibly joining the Phillies. Zambrano threw 4 2/3 scoreless innings in his first outing for High-A Clearwater Tuesday, but general manager Ruben Amaro wasn't overly impressed. "He threw OK," Amaro said. "I don't think he lit the world on fire. But he's gaining arm strength. It was a little better than his last outing. He's getting stretched out. We'll see where he goes from here." John Lannan (quad) could be ready to join the Phils before Big Z, so it remains to be seen where he fits in with the big club.

The Phillies haven't revealed a timetable for Zambrano possibly joining their rotation, but Matt Gelb of the Philadelphia Inquirer thinks the righty might just need one more minor league start. He would replace Tyler Cloyd in the rotation.

Zambrano recently agreed to a deal with the independent Long Island Ducks, but never reported to the club because he was confident he would be able to find a minor league deal somewhere. The 31-year-old had a mediocre 4.49 ERA and 95/75 K/BB ratio over 132 1/3 innings last season with the Marlins and will function as rotation depth.
