However, he served mainly as a middle reliever and posted a 5.40 ERA and 1.44 WHIP in 58.1 innings. It's not yet clear whether he'll remain in the organization if he goes unclaimed on waivers.

Shaw (6-2) retired the only batter he faced to earn the win Wednesday over the Tigers.

Starter Aaron Civale lasted four innings in his return from a wrist injury, while Shaw was credited with the win for his clean sixth inning. After allowing multiple runs in his last three appearances in July, Shaw has rebounded to begin August with three consecutive scoreless outings. The veteran reliever has a 5.23 ERA, 1.43 WHIP, 34:21 K:BB and six holds across 41.1 innings this year, and his inconsistency has kept him relegated to a low-leverage role.

Shaw allowed two runs on two hits and three walks with one strikeout in two innings against the Rays on Sunday. He did not factor into the decision.

Shaw has made his last two appearances as an opener ahead of Kirk McCarty, to mixed results. Shaw's given up a pair of runs in each of his last three outings and continues to struggle through the middle part of the season. The right-hander owns a 5.63 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 31:20 K:BB through 38.1 innings in 41 appearances. If he continues to function as an opener going forward, the role will reduce his chances of picking up wins and holds.

Shaw is listed as the Guardians' starting pitcher for Sunday's game in Tampa Bay, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports.

EDGE Analysis

While making his first start in 733 MLB appearances in Tuesday's loss to the Red Sox, Shaw covered 2.1 innings, so he's likely to work more than a traditional opener while he picks up his second start of the week. Even so, Shaw probably shouldn't be expected to work any more than 3-to-4 innings, so he'll have a tough time qualifying for the win unless the Guardians race out to an early lead and maintain it throughout. Kirk McCarty is the primary option to work in long relief behind Shaw and is a likelier candidate to factor into any decision.

Shaw pitched 2.1 innings, giving up two runs on three hits and a walk while striking out two in Tuesday's win over the Red Sox. He did not factor in the decision.

Shaw made his first career "start" Tuesday, serving as an opener for primary pitcher Kirk McCarty. The right-hander pitched two clean innings before allowing three runners to reach base and a run to score while registering one out in the third frame and getting replaced on the mound. Another run he was responsible for would come around to score after he exited the contest. Shaw has now allowed four runs on four hit and three walks over four frames his last two appearances. Since the beginning of July, the 34-year-old has seen his ERA rise from 5.11 to 5.45 over 36.1 innings in 40 appearances in 2022.

Guardians manager Terry Francona said Shaw will serve as the team's opening pitcher in Tuesday's game against the Red Sox, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports.

EDGE Analysis

The 34-year-old will be making his first big-league "start" after coming out of the bullpen for the first 732 appearances of his career. Since he hasn't tossed more than two innings at any point in 2022, Shaw is unlikely to make it even once through the order before Francona turns the game over to the bullpen. Meisel posits that Kirk McCarty will be recalled from Triple-A Columbus to serve as a primary pitcher behind Shaw.

Shaw (4-2) took the loss in Game 2 of Saturday's doubleheader versus the White Sox. He allowed two runs on a hit and two walks with one strikeout in 1.2 innings.

Shaw was responsible for both runners aboard in the eighth inning, and Nick Sandlin took a blown save when he allowed them to score on an AJ Pollock two-run single. This was the fourth time in Shaw's last 10 appearances that he's allowed multiple runs. He now has a 5.29 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 28:16 K:BB with four holds through 34 innings in 39 appearances.

He was able to keep the Guardians' deficit to one run, and they pulled ahead in the bottom of the seventh to put the veteran reliever in line for the win. This was Shaw's first win since June 15, and he's struggled by allowing at least a run in six of his last nine appearances. The right-hander has a 5.17 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 26:14 K:BB while adding four holds in 31.1 innings in 37 outings this season. Given his recent struggles, he'll likely continue to see middle-relief assignments.
