Alex Gonzalez is out of the Brewers' lineup Tuesday. Gonzalez was away from the club all weekend to be present for the birth of his child and is being given another day off to get back into the swing of things. Cesar Izturis will start at shortstop against the Dodgers.

Alex Gonzalez hit a three-run homer to pace the Brewers offense in their 7-4 victory over the Cubs on Tuesday. The first inning long ball was Gonzalez' lone hit of the night, finishing 1-for-4, but it was more than enough to lead the Brewers to victory. He's only hitting .235 on the young season, but does provide a powerful bat at the bottom of the Brewers lineup.

Alex Gonzalez stayed white-hot Wednesday, singling and doubling while driving in two and scoring one against the Diamondbacks. The offseason acquisition is now batting .405 with three homers and a 1.159 OPS this spring. It's good to see, sure, but we have plenty of evidence to suggest Gonzalez will be a streaky hitter, at best, this season. He's the owner of a career .247/.291/.399 batting line.

Alex Gonzalez ripped three singles in three chances in Wednesday's win over the Cubs. The 35-year-old compiled a weak .642 OPS last season. But he has produced mightily this spring, enjoying a .476/.500/.762 line in 21 at-bats.

Alex Gonzalez doubled in two runs and tripled in two more in Wednesday's win over the White Sox. Gonzalez was hitless in his first two spring games for the Brew Crew, but he was the team's offensive star in this one. Japanese import Norichika Aoki also had a pair of hits, including a triple, and scored and drove in a run.

Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that Alex Gonzalez will make $4 million with the Brewers next season while his contract includes a $4.25 million vesting option for 2013. The option vests if he reaches 525 plate appearances, which he has done in each of the last two seasons. The 34-shortstop year-old earned $2.5 million in 2011 while batting .241/.270/.372 with 15 home runs and 56 RBI over 593 plate appearances. While he's essentially a wash offensively with Yuniesky Betancourt, he is a major upgrade from a defensive standpoint.

Brewers signed SS Alex Gonzalez to a one-year contract with a vesting option for 2013. The financial terms of the contract have not yet been revealed. Gonzalez, 34, batted .241/.270/.372 with 15 home runs and 56 RBI over 593 plate appearances this past season for the Braves and will take over as Milwaukee's starting shortstop in 2012. He should remain a decent fantasy option.
