Royals manager Ned Yost announced Friday that Luke Hochevar will undergo Tommy John surgery. It's unfortunate but also the right decision, as Hochevar had little chance of successfully pitching through a sprained ulnar collateral ligament. The Royals' bullpen is deep, but losing Hochevar hurts after he dominated in relief last year with a 1.92 ERA while striking out 82 over 70 1/3 innings. It's also poor timing for the pitcher, as Hochevar will be a free agent this winter. He'll now likely have to settle for an incentive-laden, one-year deal.
