Yankees GM Brian Cashman indicated Tuesday that Rodriguez will have to win a job in the spring, ESPN.com reports. "He's going to compete for at-bats and for a position," Cashman said. "The position would be third, and obviously DH and that's it. Maybe some time at first base. He may be eventually the everyday third baseman, he may be the everyday DH; I just don't know. I'm going to do everything in my power to drum up some opportunities that are realistic and present them to ownership that may or may not involve third base. I don't know. It's very early in the process." While Cashman stressed that nothing's definite, it's sounding like Rodriguez will head into spring training without a set job for the first time in two decades. There are numerous factors in play, including the uncertainty regarding Rodriguez's abilities following a nearly year-and-a-half layoff, the additional $30 million in incentives Rodriguez could earn if he hits his home runs milestones, and the very real possibility the Yankees could sign a third baseman. According to Cashman, if he signs a third baseman, the signee "would be the starting third baseman," leaving Rodriguez to DH primarily, though Cashman confirmed that the 39-year-old Rodriguez could also play some at first.
