Morton, who was originally placed on the DL on Sunday with right hip inflammation, has been re-diagnosed with a sports hernia, MLB.com's Tom Singer reports. Morton still intends to return this season, however, the nature of this injury would seem to be more problematic than simple inflammation. Sports hernias typically require a surgical procedure, but Morton plans to push that back to the offseason in an attempt to pitch through the ailment. The Pirates are quickly fading from the NL playoff race in the wake of their seven-game losing streak, and if they find themselves out of contention by the time Morton is deemed ready to return, the team brass may just opt to shut the right-hander down for the season and send him in for surgery.
