Joe Smith converted his 10th save with a scoreless inning in Thursday's win over the Astros. Smith worked around a two-out Marwin Gonzalez walk to protect the 5-2 lead; it was the first free pass he'd issued since June 10. The 30-year-old closer has converted five straight save chances. Smith is firmly ahead of Jason Grilli in the ninth inning pecking order for now, but Grilli, who hasn't allowed a run as an Angel, is lurking. The sidewinding righty owns a 2.70 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 40/9 K/BB ratio.
