Descalso is projected to serve as the Rockies' top reserve at second base, shortstop, and third base this season, Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post reports. Signed to a two-year, $3.6 million contract in December, Descalso will bring versatility to a Rockies squad that has received scarce contributions from its backup infielders during four consecutive losing seasons. While Descalso's work with the bat over his career isn't impressive by any means, the Rockies have more than enough hitting talent across the other spots in the lineup to compensate for that deficiency. The Rockies believe his solid glovework will be enough to make him a capable insurance plan in the event that Troy Tulowitzki and Nolan Arenado fall victim to injuries again in 2015.
