Romine will probably play some first base during spring training, Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press reports. With Victor Martinez set for knee surgery next week and Miguel Cabrera (ankle) coming off a significant procedure, the Tigers are beginning to look at potential fill-in candidates at first base. Romine, a shortstop by trade, has not appeared at first base in the majors, and he's doesn't have the power of a prototypical corner-infield bat, but there simply aren't many other options. Manager Brad Ausmus said Steven Moya probably will not play much at first base this spring, as the team thinks that could slow his development.
