The Rays designated Gomes for assignment Friday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. The Rays were in need of a spot on their 40-man roster, and they decided Gomes was the player they were willing to expose to waivers. Gomes posted a 3.71 ERA and 1.15 WHIP in 29 games out of the Rays' bullpen last season, so it would not be surprising to see him snapped up by another squad.
