GM Ruben Amaro Jr. said Howard's salary will not restrict manager Ryne Sandberg from platooning or benching the first baseman next season if another player on the roster is earning a shot at more playing time, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports. The Phillies are still looking to deal Howard this offseason, but his massive salary makes it very difficult. Things will be complicated next May if Howard is still with the Phils as he will obtain 10 and 5 rights, which grants him full no trade protection. Darin Ruf, Maikel Franco and Cody Asche could all have an opportunity to carve out some playing time at Howard's expense next season if the one-time MVP continues his offensive decline.
