Free agent CB Nnamdi Asomugha has decided to retire. Asomugha will sign a one-day contract with the Raiders on Friday, retiring as a member of the organization that made him the No. 31 overall pick of the 2003 draft. Asomugha was a two-time All Pro for the Raiders, including in 2010. He hit the open market the following summer, and was the most sought after post-lockout free agent. Asomugha landed a five-year, $60 million deal from the Eagles that included $25 million guaranteed, but was a mammoth bust in the City of Brotherly Love, earning his release last March. He signed a one-year with the 49ers in March, but played just 149 snaps before being benched in Week 4. He was released in November. Asomugha was only 32, but simply had nothing left.

Nnamdi Asomugha passed through waivers unclaimed. The rapid demise of Asomugha has reached the tipping point as he's now on the street, free to be signed by anyone. This comes just 30 months after he was widely considered the top free agent available and the Eagles signed him to a five-year, $60 million contract. Since then, Asomugha has literally been one of the worst corners in the NFL.

49ers waived CB Nnamdi Asomugha. They'll activate Eric Wright to replace Asomugha as cornerback depth. Appearing in just three games with San Francisco, 32-year-old Asomugha graded out negatively as both a pass and run defender in Pro Football Focus' ratings, before being benched in favor of Tramaine Brock. Brock has been outstanding at left corner in nickel packages. Asomugha will now head to waivers, where he's unlikely to be claimed despite a manageable $1 million base salary.

With CB Eric Wright (reserve/NFI) nearing a return, 49ers CB Nnamdi Asomugha might be on the chopping block. Wright was cleared to resume practicing Thursday and GM Trent Baalke said he'll be activated at some point ahead of Week 10. The 49ers have a Week 9 bye. Asomugha has been a healthy scratch the past three games and is the No. 5 corner. He's near the bottom of Pro Football Focus' corner ratings.

49ers CB Nnamdi Asomugha has been a healthy scratch in three straight weeks. Asomugha has lost No. 3 corner duties to Tramaine Brock and he's also playing behind undrafted rookie Darryl Morris. It's obvious that his struggles in Philly were not due to the Wide 9 scheme. Asomugha has been one of the league's worst corners ever since he left Oakland following the 2010 season.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports CB Nnamdi Asomugha has a "really good shot" to make the 49ers' 53. Per Rapoport, the 49ers plan to "limit his snaps" and "love the chip on his shoulder" after Asomugha was written off by many-a-football-watcher following his brutal 2012 season in Philly. Asomugha is betting on himself with a one-year, $1.325 million contract that includes zero guaranteed money. He's battling Tramaine Brock to be the nickel back behind Carlos Rogers and Tarell Brown.

49ers CB Nnamdi Asomugha says his "confidence is in a good place," but admits he was rattled by his disastrous two seasons in Philadelphia. "I've been out there making plays and doing a lot of the things that I know I can do," Asomugha said. Asomugha's positive assessment of his play comes 10 days after DC Vic Fangio said he'd been a "mixed bag" through the early days of camp. Asomugha is still fighting for a roster spot.

According to defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, CB Nnamdi Asomugha has been a "mixed bag" through one week of 49ers camp. The comments don't sound promising. "He's had some good days out here and some days when we weren't sure if he'd be able to still have it," Fangio said. "I think we're kind of in between on him. ... Hopefully, he'll still be able to have some gas left in his tank to go out there and play like he did prior to going to Philadelphia. So I think the jury is still out there."
