It's not Ryan Mathews all over again, Mathews is a legitimately talented running back that has struggled in his introduction to the league. Everyone forgets that Rashard Mendenhall's rookie season was a total bust, which saw him outplayed by a worn down Willie Parker. The learning curve isn't universal, even for running backs.
Daniel Thomas' problem is just a lack of talent. He's not that fast, or that physical. He doesn't look like a starting running back in any facet of the game, nevermind his struggles. Hard to stay excited about this kid, unfortunately.
but he was really good in college... does he lack speed? and as far as physicality, he's kind of big, right? i'm just thinking of reasons not to cut him, but my inclination is to cut him
Keep him if you can, because you're right, he flashed ability in college. But he's really just a Tim Hightower clone: he lumbers rather than cuts, and his strength and ability to push through tackles for additional yards doesn't match his size. If there is a Jacoby Ford, Brandon Jacobs, Michael Bush, or similarly worthy bench addition, I say pull the trigger. Thomas is in line for about five touches, this Sunday.

DT is OT and off my roster...what a waist of pick - Time to add a deep sleeper to bench - maybe SF b/up RB
