McDonagh signed a seven-year contract extension with the Lightning worth $6.75 million annually, Erik Erlendsson of LightningInsider.com reports. The deal will go into effect starting in the 2019-20 season.

EDGE Analysis

The Lightning acquired McDonagh in a blockbuster trade near last season's trade deadline and the team has now locked him up until he's 37 years old. The 29-year-old blueliner wasn't too spectacular with his new team last season, scoring just two goals and three points in 17 regular season games and five assists in 17 postseason contests. Still, McDonagh has proven to be a very strong and consistent two-way defenseman and should get back to scoring 30-plus points.

McDonagh scored 29 points (four goals, 25 assists) in 63 games for both the Rangers and Lightning in 2017-18, averaging 23:19 on the season.

EDGE Analysis

Although you'd think moving from the Rangers middling 22nd ranked offense (2.78 goals per game) to the Lightning's first (3.54 goals per game) would result in an increase in the points department, that wasn't the case for McDonagh. He put up 26 points in 49 games on Broadway and just three in 14 games down south, but McDonagh also didn't have a power-play presence and his 21:17 of ice time was over two minutes lower in Tampa Bay than what he averaged in New York. Still, the University of Wisconsin alumni was able to put up five points in the postseason, and as usual was fearless on defense blocking 163 shots in the regular season. Although McDonagh is set to return for 2018-19 in Tampa Bay, it seems likely he'll remain on the second pairing with Victor Hedman manning the first, and he'll have to battle out Mikhail Sergachev for a power-play spot.

McDonagh blocked four shots Tuesday in a 4-2 road win over the Capitals to take Game 3 of the conference finals.

EDGE Analysis

The American defenseman missed the scoresheet for the fifth consecutive game, but he was terrific defensively, highlight by a heads-up play that saw McDonagh bat down an Evgeny Kuznetsov shot on the penalty kill. Tampa still has work to do as it's down 2-1 in the series, though it was nice to see McDonagh -- who's averaging 22:21 in the playoffs -- bouncing back from a terrible Game 2 performance in which he posted a minus-3 rating at home.

McDonagh notched an assist during a 3-1 victory over New Jersey on Saturday during Game 5.

EDGE Analysis

Although Tampa Bay provides a different playoff atmosphere than Broadway, McDonagh has wasted no time making his impact felt for his new club in the postseason notching four points in the opening series, although he's still searching for his first playoff goal in blue. The 28-year-old has been logging heavy minutes on the second unit averaging 22:52 of ice time per game along with the second most five-on-five minutes on the team just behind Victor Hedman, and figures to see similar usage throughout Tampa Bay's cup run. McDonagh's been strong on the defensive end per usual as well, going plus-two over the five games while also supplying five hits and seven blocked shots.

McDonagh set up two goals in Tampa Bay's 5-3 win over New Jersey in Game 2 on Saturday.

EDGE Analysis

He now has three helpers in two postseason games in a Tampa uniform. McDonagh is a defensive pillar in bright blue and hopes to finally lift that large silver chalice come June.

McDonagh has just three points in 11 games in Tampa Bay.

EDGE Analysis

McDonagh is settling into Tampa, but it has been an adjustment. He recorded the fourth-highest ice time (18:56) of Lightning defenders Sunday.

McDonagh (upper body) made his Tampa debut Saturday in a 3-2 shootout win over Montreal. He fired one shot on goal, blocked two shots and skated 19:15.

EDGE Analysis

He was paired with old Ranger friend Dan Girardi. McDonagh was solid overall and should start to make an impact in both ends of the ice very soon. Activate him now.

McDonagh (upper body) will debut for the Lightning on Saturday against the Senators, Bryan Burns of the Lightning's official site reports.

EDGE Analysis

McDonagh initially targeted a March 6 debut for the Bolts, but a slow recovery pushed the date back slightly. Tampa Bay fans will finally get an opportunity to see the trade deadline acquisition in action for Saturday's contest against the Canadiens. He is expected to pair with Braydon Coburn for the affair and should also join the power play. A more potent attack in Tampa could also result in an improved point rate moving forward for the star blueliner.

McDonagh (upper body) has been officially cleared for contact and will discuss with coaches and trainers the possibility of him returning for Saturday's matchup with the Canadiens, Erik Erlendsson of LightningInsider.com reports.

EDGE Analysis

McDonagh's return to the ice appears to be nearing. The blueliner's potential return to the ice Saturday could provide a huge boost on the backlines and the power play for a Bolts squad holding the top spot in the Atlantic Division. More information on his availability versus Montreal should surface after he gets a practice under his belt, but it's a good sign that he's even talking about the possibility.

McDonagh (upper body) joined practice Thursday in a regular jersey, Bryan Burns of the Lightning's official site reports.

EDGE Analysis

McDonagh is still not expected to return until Tuesday's matchup with Ottawa at the earliest, but his full participation at practice is certainly a good sign. The blueliner has yet to suit up for his new team due to his upper-body problem and last saw action Feb. 7 against Boston. Considering the Lightning have given up 10 goals in their previous two outings, McDonagh's debut can't come soon enough.
