Whitney announced his retirement from the NHL on Wednesday, ESPN.com's Pierre LeBrun reports. Whitney spent 23 years in the NHL, with many of his most effective seasons coming in the twilight of his career. He tallied a career-best 83 points with the Hurricanes in 2006-07 and registered 77 points in 2011-12 with the Coyotes, when he was 39 years old. All told, he supplied 1,064 points over 1,330 regular season games spent with the Sharks, Oilers, Panthers, Blue Jackets, Red Wings, Hurricanes, Coyotes, and Stars.

The Dallas Stars don't plan on re-signing Ray Whitney this summer. Whitney had just nine goals and 32 points in 69 games in 2013-14. The fact that he won't be returning to Dallas isn't surprising after he criticized the team over his lack of playing time down the stretch. He turned 42 in May, so it wouldn't be surprising if he ultimately hangs up his skates instead of signing a new contract over the summer.

Ray Whitney didn't like the way he was utilized this season in Dallas, especially down the stretch. "The legs are still there, but it's nearly impossible to get the legs moving when you're over 40 and playing eight to 10 minutes and only on the power play," Whitney said. "After the first 10 games, I was on the second line, but the last three or four months, it was the fourth. They went with youth and they do have some good kids. I can't deny that." He will turn 42 years of age Thursday and he seems to understand that the 2013-14 campaign may have been his last. Whitney is eligible for unrestricted free agency in July, but he said: "There won't be a lot of people banging down the doors." He produced nine goals and 32 points in 69 games this past season.

Ray Whitney could have played his last game in the NHL. The veteran turns 42 on Thursday but struggled this season as the Stars used him on the power play and some time on the fourth line after the 10 game mark of the regular season. His family will be in Phoenix this season and unless he can get a job nearby (the Coyotes or a California team) he will likely retire. "Phoenix could be the easiest solution, but I don't know what their plans are," Whitney said. "My daughter's in Grade 7 now and it's time to get her settled, get the family all set. Moving around is all done for them."

The Dallas Stars are expected to make veteran winger Ray Whitney a healthy scratch in Game 6 against the Anaheim Ducks on Sunday, according to TSN's Aaron Ward. This shouldn't be shocking, being that "The Wizard" has failed to score a single point in five playoff games and only has three SOG in the series. He only managed to score 32 points in 69 games this season.

Ray Whitney didn't end up playing on the top line in Game 2, but coach Lindy Ruff is looking for more from the veteran forward. "I think Game 1 was a hard game for Ray. Coming off an injury, the level of energy in that game was more than he had seen. There were times he wasn't quite up to pace," Ruff said. "But I would expect more from Ray [Friday]. He's a veteran guy who we think can make those plays." The 41-year-old winger picked up nine goals and 32 points in 69 games during the regular season. He doesn't have a point in two playoff matches so far.

Stars coach Lindy Ruff is planning on making lineup changes for Game 2, but he naturally didn't want to go into specifics. Ray Whitney skated alongside Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin during Friday's skate, but Ruff downplayed that. "We just did a warm-up and I said any three guys go," Ruff said. Whitney said he wasn't sure what line he would end up on.

Ray Whitney (lower body) will play in Dallas' postseason opener on Wednesday. Whitney missed the Stars' last six regular season contests. Look for him to play alongside Shawn Horcoff and Alex Chiasson on the team's fourth line.

Ray Whitney (lower body) won't be available for Friday's game. It sounds like Whitney is close to returning though. He might play on Sunday if the Stars need to win that game to make the playoffs. If not, he will probably continue to rest until the postseason.
