It remains to be seen whether or not Diaz will actually get on the ice for New York. AHL Hartford's season is over and the team may just be looking to add depth. In 37 contests with the Wolf Pack this season, the blueliner netted 21 points including four power-play goals. If he does suit up, it would be the first NHL game of the year for the 30-year-old. What affect a playoff start will have on Diaz's plans to play in the Swiss NLA after this season is unclear.

More a necessary deed than a preferred transaction for the team as they cut the roster down to 23, the move allows the organization to protect Dylan McIlrath from the very same process. While most observers felt Diaz outplayed Kevin Klein in the preseason and the team brass is rumored to be actively seeking trades to loosen the roster and salary cap, it appears Diaz will join Hartford of the AHL when and if he clears waivers.

Diaz collected a pair of assists in Monday's preseason win over the Devils.

With an impressive group of veteran blue liners ahead of him on the depth chart, it appears nothing has changed for the 29-year-old Diaz in his second tenor with the organization. The Swiss defenseman played most of the night with Chris Summers on the team's third-pairing. Diaz will need to string together quite a few of these nights over the next few weeks to have any hope of being team's seventh defenseman on opening night.

Diaz is in close competition with Dylan McIlrath for the Rangers' seventh defenseman roster spot, Steve Zipay of Newsday reports.

EDGE Analysis

Chris Summers and Brady Skjei are also said to be in the mix. If Diaz was to impress in camp and land the job, it's highly unlikely that he would play enough, let alone produce with the puck. His best offensive season came in 2011-12, when he posted 16 points with Montreal.

The Rangers signed Diaz on Wednesday, NJ.com reports. Diaz, who notched four points in 56 games this past season for the Flames, joins the Rangers for a second stint with the team. He'll boost the Blueshirts' blue line depth in 2015-16, but the 29-year-old remains a break or two away from fantasy consideration.

Diaz (lower body) is slated to play Tuesday against the Ducks, Pat Steinberg of Sportsnet.ca reports. Based on the team's pre-game skate, Diaz -- who last suited up on April 2 -- figures to work on the Flames' third defensive pairing Tuesday, along with David Schlemko.

Diaz participated in morning skate Sunday, the Calgary Sun reports. Diaz has not played since April 2nd, but with three consecutive practices under his belt, it looks like his return is near. While he won't necessarily be ready to go for Sunday night's game, it would be a surprise if he did not participate in this series.

Diaz (lower body) fully participated in the Flames' practice on Saturday. Diaz has now logged full participation in back-to-back practices, and has a legitimate chance of returning to Calgary's lineup on Sunday for Game 2 of the Flames' series with Anaheim. Calgary should provide an update on his status prior to puck drop on Sunday.

Diaz (lower body) took part in an optional practice Friday, Randy Sportak of the Calgary Sun reports. Diaz continues to work his way back from a lower-body injury that has held him out for an extended period of time. It's unclear if or when he will return this season, but it could come this series if all goes well.

Diaz (lower body) traveled with the Flames to Anaheim for Thursday's Game 1, Roger Millions of Sportsnet reports. Diaz won't be a candidate to play Thursday, but the fact that he's traveling with the team suggests he might be ready to resume skating. Though the 29-year-old hasn't played since April 2, he could be an option later in the series if he's able to get in a few practices over the next few days.
