Handzus announced his retirement Thursday, TSN reports.
EDGE Analysis
Handzus accrued 184 goals and 482 points in 1,009 NHL games, but he hasn't played in the league since the 2013-14 season. Instead, he spent three seasons with Banksa Bystrica of the Slovakian Extraliga, sitting out the 2017-18 campaign as well.

Handzus signed with Banska Bystrica of the Slovakian Extraliga on Tuesday, Tracey Myers of CSN Chicago reports. The 37-year-old looked like he was headed for retirement after failing to garner an NHL deal in the offseason, but he'll rejoin his hometown club in what likely marks the final season of his distinguished career. Hadnzus has accumulated 482 points over his 1,009 career games at the NHL level.

Michal Handzus might have a hard time finding a new team now that Chicago is reportedly out of the mix. Handzus is coming off of a rough season where he scored four goals and 16 points in 59 contests and averaged just 13:38 minutes per game. He's 37 years old now, so the once reliable secondary scorer isn't expected to do much offensively going forward.

Michal Handzus won't be back with the Blackhawks next season. The team has informed him of their decision, so the veteran forward will test the open market as an unrestricted free agent in July. Handzus said he wasn't ready to retire, so he'll seek a job with another club in the summer. He's coming off a disappointing season, where he generated four goals and 16 points in 59 games, and at the age of 37 he probably won't demand that much in terms of salary.

Michal Handzus isn't ready to retire yet, but he may not be back with the Blackhawks next season. "I'll be playing," said the 37-year-old pending unrestricted free agent. "I know what my situation is. I'm not a young guy anymore so we'll see what's going to happen. Obviously this year wasn't the year I'd hoped it would be. I'll put work in, in the summer. Get my body in better shape and we'll see what happens next year." He produced just four goals and 16 points in 59 games this past season.

Michal Handzus hasn't been pleased with his play during the playoffs. "I haven't played very well," he said. "I want to help the team as much as I can. I'm playing [on the penalty kill] and we were giving up a lot of goals, so I didn't play very well offensively. I'm glad I came through." He registered his second goal and third point in 17 games on Wednesday night. Still, Handzus kept the Blackhawks alive in the postseason when he beat Los Angeles netminder Jonathan Quick in double overtime. He was replaced on the second line by Andrew Shaw in the contest, but scored the winner after he was put back alongside Patrick Kane and Brandon Saad.

Michal Handzus scored his first career playoff overtime goal Wednesday night 82 minutes after puck drop to lift the Blackhawks to a season-saving 5-4 win over Los Angeles and send the series back to the Staples Center for Game 6. Handzus laid his claim to the biggest goal of the Hawks' post-season despite struggling through these playoffs with just three points in 17 games. His lack of contributions have sent him down Coach Quenneville's depth chart, but made no mistake when Brandon Saad fed him right in the slot in the second overtime and he beat Jonathan Quick with a nifty backhander.

Despite playing alongside extremely gifted scorers such as Patrick Kane and Patrick Sharp, Michal Handzus continues to be an offensive non-factor. We do concede that Handzus is centering the Hawks' second line mainly due to his defensive ability, but one would think that he could have contributed a little more than the two points in the Hawks' 14 post-season games he has to date. We are a bit baffled that Chicago coach Joel Quenneville has not shifted one of his younger more talented forwards into the second-line center role but we aren't the Hawks' bench boss are we?

Michal Handzus saw just 12:18 of ice time in Game 3, but he made an impact. He was credited with three blocked shots and he picked up an assist on Marcus Kruger's empty net goal in Chicago's 2-0 victory. "The doctor - he's a warrior," coach Joel Quenneville said. "You can't say enough to what he brings the team and the little things he does so well. He leaves it out there. He's a great pro." 3:45 of his ice time was spent on the penalty kill and his fearlessness inspired his teammates in the contest. Handzus is a good leader for the Blackhawks, but he doesn't have much in the way of fantasy relevance.

Michal Handzus was back on Chicago's second line at practice on Tuesday. He skated between Marian Hossa and Patrick Sharp in the session. Handzus recorded just four goals and 16 points in 59 games during the regular season. If he opens the playoffs with Hossa and Sharp as his wingers then he could get a good fantasy boost.
