The Blues placed Brodeur on unconditional waivers Tuesday, thereby terminating his one-year contract with the team, ESPN's Pierre LeBrun reports.It's just a mere formality after Brodeur elected to retire from professional hockey at the end of January. He will stick around with the St. Louis organization as a member of their front office.

Brodeur is set to announce his retirement as a player, NHL.com reports. Per the report, the veteran goalie -- who has been away from the Blues for the past two weeks on a personal leave of absence -- is slated to join the team's front office. The 42-year-old Brodeur, who compiled a 3-3-0 record with a 2.87 GAA in seven games for the Blues this season, finishes up his distinguished NHL career (spent mostly with New Jersey) with an all-time high 691 wins to go along with 125 career shutouts, also an all-time league-high mark.

Brodeur (personal) has chosen to extend his leave of absence from the Blues by another week, Sean Leahy of Yahoo! Sports reports. The All-Star break will afford Brodeur some additional time to ponder his future, but it doesn't sound like another opportunity will come about with the Blues. Given that Brodeur posted a meager 2.87 GAA and .899 save percentage during his seven appearances with St. Louis, it's hard to imagine another team taking a chance on the 42-year-old.

Per the report, Brodeur will rejoin the Blues in one week and his future with the organization will be addressed at that time. After posting a 16-save shutout against Colorado in his previous start, Brodeur allowed four goals on 33 shots. He's no longer an elite goalie due to his age and consistency will be a problem. He has alternated wins and losses in his past four starts. Start Brodeur with caution and though Jake Allen has struggled he's still the team's future No. 1 goalie.

Brodeur will start Friday's game against the Ducks, Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. Brodeur was expected to return either Friday or Saturday, and the Blues have made the call to deploy him in Anaheim. With Brodeur in goal Friday, Brian Elliott will get the call Saturday in San Jose.

Coach Ken Hitchock said Brodeur will start either Friday against the Ducks or Saturday against the Sharks, Tom Timmermann of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. Brian Elliott (knee) is back to start Tuesday's game, but the Blues will apparently stick with three goalies. While it seems that all three will have opportunities, the team may eventually want to find a leader among the bunch.

Brodeur stopped all 16 shots he faced Monday to blank the Avalanche, earning his NHL-record 125th career shutout. The St. Louis defense deserves most of the credit for keeping Brodeur's shirt clean, but the aging netminder deserves a pat on the back for avoiding the mistakes that have plagued him in his previous outings with the Blues. Brodeur is now seven wins away from 700 for his career, but with Brian Elliott's return from a lower-body injury seemingly imminent, his future with the team remains on shaky ground.
