Lupul (abdomen) failed his second physical and will begin the season on long-term injured reserve, Daren Millard of Sportsnet reports.

EDGE Analysis

The story remains the same for Lupul -- there is still no timetable for him to return to NHL action after he missed all of the 2015-16 campaign with his injury. It's looking more and more like his playing days are over, but even if they somehow aren't, the veteran winger won't be a fantasy asset in basically any format.

Lupul (abdomen) once again took to social media on Wednesday to apologize for his "inappropriate response" following his failed physical at the start of training camp, reports the Toronto Star.

EDGE Analysis

Lupul caused a controversy by calling out the Leafs and suggesting they were cheating by putting him on long term injury reserve. "It was an inappropriate response, and I deleted it, but I take full responsibility," said Lupul on Twitter. "It's been extremely tough not being able to play over the past 1.5 years. I apologize to the media, fans, Leafs organization, and most of all my teammates for this unneeded distraction." Loops also said he hopes to get back on the ice some day, but he turns 34 on Saturday and will be hard-pressed to return to the NHL ever again.

Lupul used his verified Instagram account on Sunday to suggest he did not fail a physical as the Leafs announced late last week, reports the Toronto Star.

EDGE Analysis

Lupul, who failed his physical last week and remains on long-term injury reserve, removed the "Haha failed physical. They cheat, everyone lets them," post a couple hours after it first went up. Loops also posted, "I'm ready. Just waiting the call." His injury has been shrouded in mystery since it happened and many believe the Leafs simply use the long-term IR as an end run around the salary cap. As it stands, Lupul will not play for the team and even if he was cleared, his salary is so high that it is likely impossible for any other team to consider adding him in trade.

As anticipated, Lupul (abdomen) did not pass his physical Thursday, Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic reports.

EDGE Analysis

Lupul was sidelined for the entire 2016-17 campaign due to a sports hernia and will likely remain out this year as well. The Leafs will use long-term injured reserve in order to get some cap relief with the 33-year-old winger almost certainly retiring when his contract expires after the season.

Lupul, who missed the entire Maple Leafs' campaign with a sports hernia injury, failed a physical at the end of the season, Kristen Shilton of TSN reports.

EDGE Analysis

A versatile but injury-prone winger, it's been widely speculated that Lupul may have placed his last game. The Buds have him under contract for one more year at $5.25 million, at which point he'd become an unrestricted free agent. If he does, in fact, hang up his skates for good, Lupul will finish with 420 points (205 goals, 215 assists) in 701 career contests split between the Ducks, Oilers, Flyers and Leafs.

Lupul was left unprotected by the Maple Leafs for the upcoming expansion draft, despite missing the entire season to injury. All other NHL players who missed the whole season because of injury were ruled ineligible for the draft, reports the Toronto Star.

EDGE Analysis

"None of the draft exemptions were automatic," said NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly. "Each were evaluated on a case-by-case basis. That includes Lupul." So, that means one of two things. Either Loops believes he's healthy enough to play or Leafs' general manager Lou Lamoriello has a deal with Vegas GM George McPhee to take Lupul and stay away from someone like Kerby Rychel or Brendan Leipsic. The Leafs would need to sweeten the deal for the Knights to take Lupul's $5.25 million deal off their hands. But that contract would certainly help them reach the cap floor of $55.4 million.

Lupul remains on Toronto's long-term injured reserve list.

EDGE Analysis

Loops and his $5.25 million salary remain on the Leafs' payroll, but they get cap relief for that amount. Lupul was unable to start the season with the team after failing a team physical in September. He has one more year on his contract, but he will be 34 heading into next season and his career is in jeopardy.

Lupul (sports hernia) will start the 2016-17 season on injured reserve, Paul Hendrick of Leafs TV reports.

EDGE Analysis

Lupul has been dogged by injuries the last several seasons and could eventually find himself on long-term IR if he continues to be sidelined. For now, it appears the team is going to stick with him and hope that he can return to action later this year. During his abridged 2015-16 campaign, the veteran garnered just 11 goals and three helpers.

Lupul (sports hernia) is a buyout candidate after playing in just 280 games in the last six seasons.

EDGE Analysis

The game has passed the oft-injured winger by, so the Leafs will need to trade him, buy him out or give him the Stephane Robidas rot on long-term IR treatment. Lupul is owed nine million over the next two seasons, but it's a widely-known secret around Toronto that he's played his last game in blue and white.

Lupul (sports hernia) is currently able to participate in light training activities and is expected to return in time for 2016-17 training camp, Dhiren Mahiban of Yahoo! Sports reports.

EDGE Analysis

Lupul made just 46 appearances this season before suffering a sports hernia in early February. He still has two years remaining on his current contract with Toronto and figures to take on a similar role with the team during the 2016-17 campaign while playing on the wing.
