O'Brien was recalled by the Avalanche on Tuesday.

EDGE Analysis

Despite hearing his name called by the Senators in the first round (29th overall) of 2007 draft, O'Brien has failed to garner a full-time role in the NHL -- he's only appeared in 67 career games -- and it's evident that he's best suited as a call-up option. In this case, he'll assume the spot of Rene Bourque, who has been placed on injured reserve with a lower-body ailment.

O'Brien has been returned to the minors, Tom Gulitti of The Record reports.

EDGE Analysis

O'Brien was a first-round (27th overall) draft selection in 2007, but the 26-year-old hasn't been able to hang onto a stable role in the NHL. In 67 career games at that level, he's produced just eight goals and four assists -- that makes him little more than organizational depth at this juncture.

O'Brien has been recalled from AHL Albany.

EDGE Analysis

O'Brien has contributed seven goals and five assists with the Baby Devils this season but has yet to make his season debut at the NHL level. A number of forwards that regularly play for the parent club are on the shelf -- including Michael Cammalleri, who is on injured reserve with an upper-body ailment -- so O'Brien gets the call as an insurance option.

O'Brien signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Devils on Wednesday, Tom Gulitti of The Record reports.

O'Brien spent the first half of last season in the KHL before opting out of his contract and returning to North America, where he ended up sticking with the Capitals' affiliate at AHL Hersey the rest of the year. He impressed during his stay with Hershey, scoring 10 goals and 29 points in 32 games. The 26-year-old could be in line for a featured role at AHL Albany this coming season as a result, but he's unlikely to parlay it into an extended stint with the Devils.

Senators coach Paul MacLean credits the team's strong farm system as the reason Jim O'Brien didn't make the team.

O'Brien inked a two-year, one-way deal over the summer. "I think he's a casualty of the Ottawa Senators doing a good job at the draft table and doing a good job of developing players," MacLean said. "They're players that have come after him and developed and they end up being better players. That's what it is." He had five goals and an assist in 29 games last season.

Jim O'Brien was placed on waivers Thursday.

The move isn't a surprise as he was believed to be an odd-man out among a crowded group at center. The Senators also placed goaltender Nathan Lawson, forward Corey Cowick and defenseman Tyler Eckford on waivers with the intention of assigning them to the minors.

Jim O'Brien scored the only Ottawa goal in a 2-1 overtime loss to the Bruins Thursday night.

The power play marker was the fifth of the campaign for O'Brien, a figure that amazingly leads all Ottawa forwards and stands only one tally behind the injured Erik Karlsson for the team lead. Kaspars Daugavins and Zack Smith drew assists on the goal.
