While Thursday began with some optimism based on the NHL's offer, a source who spoke to the Boston Herald was skeptical from the beginning and wasn't at all surprised by how the day turned out.

"This [NHL] offer was a wolf in sheep's clothing. This whole thing, with the 50-50 split and the hope of an 82-game schedule, was choreographed a long time ago," said the source. "I'd like to say I'm surprised, but they are going in for the kill." Bruins winger Milan Lucic said it was "pretty clear" that the owners were unwilling to negotiate when they shot down three of the offers within 10 minutes, a feeling shared by many players.
