Varone is "in the mix" to make Ottawa's roster according to coach Guy Boucher, Ken Warren of the Ottawa Citizen reports.

Varone has been filling in for Mark Stone (concussion) on the top line next to Mike Hoffman and Kyle Turris, flourishing in his increased opportunity. The 25-year-old leads the team with six points during the preseason, which may be more of a testament to the players around him over his own skill. The 2009 fifth-round pick has proven to be a playmaker with AHL Binghamton (six goals and 17 helpers in 21 contests last year), but has yet to stick in the NHL.
