Mathews (ankle) did not practice Tuesday, Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports. Mathews hasn't played since Dec. 7 against New England, but the team stated Monday that a return for Week 17 is a "possibility." His absence Tuesday is not overly encouraging, though a final call likely won't be made until later in the week.

Coach Mike McCoy indicated Monday that there is a "possibility" that Mathews (ankle) could play Sunday against the Chiefs, Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports. While such an outcome is hardly a lock, the notion would be supported by a return to practice on the part of Mathews in the coming days. The running back has missed the Chargers' last two games, with his absence in that span having being filled by a backfield committee led by Branden Oliver, with Donald Brown and Ronnie Brown also in the mix.

Mathews (ankle) has been ruled out for Saturday's game against the 49ers, Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports. With Mathews out again Saturday, Branden Oliver and Donald Brown (along with Ronnie Brown to a lesser degree) are in line to see added work in the Chargers' Week 16 backfield. Oliver led the team with 12 carries this past Sunday (compared to Donald Brown's five carries and Ronnie Brown's two rushes) and thus looks like the higher-percentage fantasy option this week out of the aforementioned RB trio.

Mathews (ankle) did not practice again Thursday, Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports. Per the report, Mathews wasn't close to playing last Sunday and at this stage his status for Saturday's game against the 49ers is looking cloudy. If Mathews is out again or limited Saturday, Branden Oliver and Donald Brown (along with Ronnie Brown to a lesser degree) would be in line to see added work in the Chargers' Week 16 backfield.

Mathews (ankle) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Broncos. With Mathews out, Ricky Henne of chargers.com relays that Branden Oliver is listed as the team's starter at running back, though Donald Brown and Ronnie Brown, to a lesser degree, are also candidates to see touches in the team's Week 15 backfield as well. Oliver and Donald Brown are thus candidates to help out those scrambling to replace Mathews, but the potential for a time-share makes either back a speculative play on Sunday.

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Mathews (ankle) is viewed as doubtful to play Sunday against the Broncos. Mathews is officially listed as questionable for the contest, but after being listed as a non-participant at practice all week, it looks like he's trending toward sitting out Sunday's game, a 4:05 ET kickoff. In such a scenario, Branden Oliver and Donald Brown would be in line to head the Chargers' Week 15 backfield.

Mathews (ankle) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Broncos, ESPN.com reports. Though Mathews did not practice all week, coach Mike McCoy suggested that the running back could still end up suiting up on Sunday. "He'll be fine," McCoy noted Friday. "He's played plenty of football in his career, and he knows what to do. He's been here. He's been in the system for the two years we've been here together, so he'll be fine." In any case, Mathews' status will be worth tracking closely in advance of Sunday's game, and it's possible that a final call on his status may not arrive until shortly before the Chargers' 4:05 ET kickoff. In the event that Mathews is out, or limited at all this weekend, Donald Brown, Branden Oliver and Ronnie Brown, to a lesser degree, would be in line to see added work in the Chargers' Week 15 backfield.

Mathews (ankle) did not practice Friday, Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports. We'll have to see how the Chargers officially list Mathews later Friday, but if he is out Sunday against the Broncos, the team would turn to a backfield headed by combo of Donald Brown and Branden Oliver.
