Rookie Review - Week 7 fantasysharks.com Wed 10/16/13 9:00 AM1 Comment

Quarterback Geno Smith -- Smith did not have a lot of time in the pocket because the Pittsburgh Steelers were after him all day. Smith ended up 19-of-34 for 201 yards and two interceptions. He also suffered three sacks and ran three times for eight yards. The Jets could not do much offensively and that may continue with Santonio Holmes still hurt, Mike Goodson out for the year, and Kellen Winslow suspended for four games. You may want to look elsewhere for quarterback help. Mike Glennon -- To be perfectly honest, I didn't think Glennon had much of a chance. But then again, nothing cures what ails you like playing against the Philadelphia defense. Glennon was 26-of-43 for 273 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. He did this with one of his starting wideouts hurt also. How will he do against better defenses? Can he improve once Mike Williams returns? Running Back Giovani Bernard -- Bernard struggled running the ball, but he more than made up for it with his skills in the passing game. Bernard only had 28 yards on 15 rushes against Buffalo; however, he did catch 6-of-7 balls for 72 yards and a very nice touchdown run after the reception. He continues to show that he is exciting with the ball in his hands. Eddie Lacy -- Could we see a change in the game plan for Green Bay? The Packers had two wide receivers go down with injury on Sunday and the depth chart is looking very thin. Green Bay may decide to run the ball more often going forward, and Lacy is just the man to do it. Lacy looked really good on Sunday with 23 carries for 120 yards and he also had one catch for five yards. He may have a bigger workload for a while. Andre Ellington -- Once again this week, Ellington out-produced Rashard Mendenhall. Ellington had seven carries for 56 yards and a touchdown and also had five catches for 36 yards. The coaching staff has talked about Ellington only getting about 30-35 snaps a game because of his size. When will they realize that they should give him more chances to see how he holds up? Ellington deserves the chance to show what he can do. If he is still on your waiver wire, add him. Khiry Robinson -- Robinson continues to do well in the absence of Mark Ingram. Robinson had seven rushes for 53 yards and a touchdown against New England. What will happen when Ingram comes back? Robinson has shown he deserves chances on the field, but will the Saints give him the chance with all the other mouths to feed? Zac Stacy -- It appears that the St. ...

Fantasy 411 - Week 5 fantasysharks.com Tue 10/1/13 5:00 AM

After racking up 149 yards on 27 carries in Week 3 against Buffalo, Bilal Powell was up to his old tricks again on Sunday, logging 66 yards on 14 carries. Three catches for 42 yards made Powell's day look better than it actually was. Thirty-six of those yards came on one play. Throughout his career, Powell has proven himself to be a dependable, but underwhelming, NFL back. Now Mike Goodson returns to the New York Jets from suspension and will look to carve out a role for himself in the backfield. Goodson possesses the shiftiness and speed that Powell lacks and will certainly take some carries from Powell. A complete shift away from Powell is unlikely to happen right away, but if you are looking for a potential starting running back at a bargain basement price, Goodson might just be your guy. It seems like an eternity since Rashard Mendenhall was a bell cow back and a dependable high end RB2 for fantasy owners. Mendenhall has been subpar this season for the Arizona Cardinals. His ineffectiveness and some nagging injuries have lead to him only tallying nine and 12 carries in the last two games. The Cardinals used the offseason to stock their stable of running backs with several promising, young runners. A fourth of the way in to the season and Andre Ellington is emerging as a viable candidate to demand more carries for himself. I know that over the same two weeks, Ellington only had three and four carries himself, but he was on the field for 27 snaps in Week 3 and managed to be targeted six times each week out of the backfield. Following the Week 4 win over Tampa Bay, Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians voiced his displeasure with Mendenhall, saying that he "had a very tough day, and he can't play that way." It may be a longshot to add Ellington this week, but it appears Mendenhall's grasp on the starting gig is slipping out of his hands. Let's face it, someone is going to add Rashad Jennings off waivers this week, but I can't find a compelling reason for that person to be me. In an expanded role last season in Jacksonville, Jennings proved to be little more than a plodding runner capable of taking only what he is given. Now with Darren McFadden and Marcel Reese banged up and possibly missing time, the Raiders may have to lean on Jennings for a couple of weeks. Jennings did his damage in relief this week as a receiver and has only averaged 3.8 yards per carry on the season. With the San Diego Chargers and Kansas City Chiefs being among the better ...

New York 16, Washington 17 Giants The dual that started in week seven did not disappoint as the two quarterbacks traded blows all game long. On the receiving end for the Giants was Victor Cruz racking up 104 yards on five receptions. Nice to see Cruz stepping up his game just in time for the fantasy playoffs. Martellus Bennett was also a beneficiary catching five of seven targets, for 82 yards and the Giants lone touchdown. With the Saints coming to the Big Apple, Bennett has medium fantasy value as a lower TE1. With Andre Brown out for the season, Ahmad Bradshaw finally got the workload we all projected according to his third round ADP touching the ball 26 times for 116 yards. Bradshaw should be cemented in our lineups as a borderline RB1 next week facing New Orleans. Redskins Robert Griffin III must be touched by fate after his fumble jumped right into the hands of Skins wide receiver Josh Morgan who rolled in for a 13-yard touchdown. Not the greatest of fantasy performances, Griffin was able to set the single season rookie rushing record, the primary reason he remains a solid fantasy starter. The future of the NFL quarterback position looks brighter than ever. After a mid third quarter fumble Mike Shannahan showed his confidence in rookie running back Alfred Morris giving him the ball repeatedly on the very next series. Although Morris will never be considered for rookie of the year, he'd certainly get my vote for best draft value, both NFL and fantasy. Pierre Garcon owners who were patient all season look to have a solid WR2 on their hands. He is a lineup lock now making the championship push. Tuesday Morning Quick Hits •Lions wide receiver Ryan Broyles has been diagnosed with a torn ACL, he's done for the season. Head coach Jim Schwartz says Titus Young will not replace Broyles in the lineup meaning Mike Thomas becomes a player of intrigue. •Darren McFadden and Mike Goodson are expected to return Thursday night, but the timeshare is still unknown. Best to avoid all Raiders running backs. •Chargers left tackle Mike Harris has suffered a high ankle sprain. Best to avoid all Chargers players not named Danario Alexander (low end WR3) this week facing Pittsburgh. •Packers head coach Mike McCarthy says he'll stick with the "hot hand" at running back meaning James Starks is nothing more than a mid-RB3. •McCarthy also stated that Jordy Nelson will be "hard pressed to play" this weekend after suffering a hamstring injury. Rock And A Hard Place - Week 11 fantasysharks.com Fri 11/16/12 5:00 AM

Four teams are on a bye in week 11: Minnesota, New York Giants, Seattle, and Tennessee. That means three top ten running backs and several solid receivers are out of lineups. Below, I'll list the player, their week 11 matchup, and the percentage of leagues in which he is owned according to our friends at fleaflicker.com. DISCLAIMER: The hope is that you don't find yourself in a situation like this. The hope is that you dodge the bullet. But hope won't help you come Sunday. Let's move on to this week's targets, keeping in mind that these aren't every week starters. Instead, these are guys that should only be used if you're in some kind of roster emergency, whether it be related to bye weeks or injuries. QB Nick Foles @WAS -- 15%. I know he's a rookie, and I know it's his first start, but he completed 22-of-32 passes last week against an underrated Dallas defense. He threw for 219 yards, a score, and a pick in under three quarters. He now has a full week to prepare, a talented supporting cast, and a pass-happy offense. His offensive line still isn't healthy, or good for that matter, but the Redskins are one of the worst pass defenses in the league. Fantasysharks.com projects 230 yards, a touchdown, and two interceptions. I think he blows past those numbers. Sam Bradford vs NYJ -- 43%. Bradford has shown some flashes of the talent that made him the top overall selection in the draft a few years ago. While the Rams would like to be a run-oriented team they usually need to turn to the pass before the first half ends. Bradford looked much better last week against a proven San Francisco defense, and I believe that the biggest reason is Danny Amendola. Using Steven Jackson effectively helps, Amendola is his possession guy and security blanket. With Darrelle Revis out, I'm not afraid of the Jets defense at all, and I'd have no problem starting Bradford if needed. He'll easily top the 200 yards and score that we've projected. RB Marcel Reece vs NO -- 34%. With Darren McFadden and Mike Goodson out last week, Reece totaled 104 yards on 20 touches. He will start again and should receive a starter's workload. The Raiders coaching staff doesn't trust Taiwan Jones to hold onto the ball, so the speedier Jones will most likely see just a carry or two. Reece also faces the Saints historically poor defense and I think he outperforms the 95 total yards projected by the Fantasy Sharks staff. Chris Ivory @OAK -- 27%. While he is part of a very crowded backfield, it seems...

So, no one wants to hear the "I told you so" that goes along with Darren McFadden getting injured. You had to know that it was looming. That question was if he would make it through the year. The injury is a dreaded high ankle sprain, and while the X-rays were negative, you get a sense that he will stay on the shelf this week. The Oakland Raiders would prefer to have him healthier next week against New Orleans. The Saints have been gashed on the ground, and to have him sit this week makes sense from a precautionary standpoint. Mike Goodson is also hobbled, which points to Taiwan Jones. Is Jones ready to play? I personally think fullback Marcel Reece has more value. Regardless of who starts, take a look at Reece, especially in points-per-reception leagues. Don't get too excited about Chris Johnson's numbers the last three weeks. You should have the good sense to know that it's time to trade him. I just can't do it in my dynasty league as I'll never quite get what I want for him. Miami is on tap this week, and I'll continue to start him because I'm committed. Temper your expectation because Miami has been fairly tough to run against. He still possesses game-changing speed; there's no arguing that. The offense simply plays too many games from behind for them to put up enough for you to be excited about running backs on this roster. Danario Alexander was a good add for the San Diego Chargers since Robert Meachem hasn't lived up to billing, Eddie Royal has been injured mostly and Vincent Brown isn't quite ready to resume just yet. I don't believe that he has as much value as Malcom Floyd or Antonio Gates. The signs point to him being involved catching three balls in the first week without much practice. He may be worth a look in deeper leagues, but take a wait-and-see approach. Chris "Beanie" Wells may be available in your league. Do yourself a favor and check. The knee-jerk reaction was to drop him when he was injured. He will be back and insists that the knee and turf toe have healed sufficiently. Wells runs with authority and needs to get carries to get momentum. He should be ready Week 11 to return against St. Louis. The Week 13 game against the New York Jets has me salivating. If you have the room, make the move now. It's great to have options like this. I realize that in deep leagues that he sits on a bench some place. You can start looking for a possible trade if your league allows. Brandon Lloyd had a big week across the pond against ...

The Oakland Raiders acquired running back Mike Goodson from the Carolina Panthers on Friday in exchange for offensive tackle Bruce Campbell.

What To Do With 'Beanie'? fantasysharks.com Tue 8/23/11 5:13 AM1 Comment

All the arguments for delaying your fantasy football draft were solidified Friday night when Arizona Cardinals rookie running back and sleeper candidate Ryan Williams suffered a season-ending injury. Imagine your frustration if you spent an early pick hoping to latch on to a key cog of your fantasy team. That's just a brief commentary on the value of waiting to hold your draft. For the rest of us, we are left with the task of deciding the implications of the injury and how changed roles will affect our projections. Many owners will simply elevate Chris ‘Beanie' Wells on their draft boards. While Wells' value certainly gets a tick, I would warn against blindly penciling him in as your RB2. There will always be value for the primary running back on a team in fantasy football, but the real challenge is to properly evaluate and gauge that value. Let's take a look at what we can reasonably expect from Wells in his, possibly, expanded role. Wells is coming off a forgettable sophomore season where he saw his rushing yards dip below 400 yards and the injury bug paid him visits throughout the year. Wells has a history of battling lingering injuries dating back to his college days at Ohio State. His rookie campaign, where he logged 16 games was encouraging, but likely an anomaly. In 13 games last year, Wells saw his yards per carry drop over a yard to a paltry 3.4 and he only found the endzone twice. If you play in a points per reception league, Wells will be a drag on your team in the receiving game as well. In his brief 29-game career Wells has only hauled in 17 passes. Even if he claims the starting job outright, Wells is not a three-down back. Wells' regression, injuries and limited skill set are the exact reasons the Cardinals elected to spend an early draft pick on Williams in the first place. The biggest factor being missed in this situation is that the Cardinals will likely look to bolster their backfield by adding another back either via trade or by signing a free agent. It is highly unlikely that Wells is the workhorse the entire year. Guys like Clinton Portis or Laurence Maroney could be on their radar or they may target younger guys via trade like the Carolina Panthers' Mike Goodson or the New England Patriots' BenJarvus Green-Ellis. Goodson has shown promise in limited action and is the odd man out in a talented and crowded backfield in Carolina. Green-Ellis may be expendable for a Patriots team who drafted two running backs in the last draft. ...
