IDP Studs and Duds - Week 13 fantasysharks.com Fri 11/29/13 4:45 AM
This week is unlike any other in the fantasy football season. Not only have three games already been played this week thanks to Thanksgiving (and for that we are thankful ... at least those of us who started Oakland Raiders middle linebacker Nick Roach), but it's the last week of the regular season in many Individual Defensive Player (IDP) leagues.
That makes this a one-week playoff all its own for many fantasy teams, many of which are already staring at an early hole. There's no margin for error this week. Every single point must be squeezed from lineups.
With the pressure cranked up to 11, we'll dispense with my usual weekly banalities and get down to it. Besides, you're probably only half-awake and swimming in tryptophan. Can't have you nodding off before your lineup is set.
Every week during the 2013 season, I'll point out some individual defensive players who could be set to exceed expectations this week (studs) and some that for whatever reason are riskier plays than usual (duds).
This isn't necessarily to say that every "stud" is a must-start (it depends on your other options) or that every "dud" should be glued to your bench (just that the odds of a letdown week are greater than usual).
The bye weeks are over. Praise Butterball.
STUDS
Akiem Hicks, DE, New Orleans (at Seattle): It's been lost while Cameron Jordan has been jackstomping the crap out of the NFL, but Hicks has been hot of late, with 15 tackles and 2½ sacks over the past two weeks. That bodes well this week against a Seattle team that has been a favorable IDP matchup for defensive linemen in 2013.
Sheldon Richardson, DE, New York Jets (vs. Miami): Much like Hicks, Richardson is having a very good 2013, but the rookie has gone largely unnoticed playing in the shadow of Muhammad Wilkerson . You'd be well-advised to take notice this week. The Dolphins have allowed the most sacks in the NFL.
Olivier Vernon, DE, Miami (at New York Jets): What the heck, we'll make it three youngsters playing opposite studs this week. Vernon has tallied 6½ sacks this year, including one in each of the past two games. The "J-E-T-S Jets Jets Jets" have been "B-A-D Bad Bad Bad!" in pass protection this season.
James Anderson, OLB, Chicago (at Minnesota): Make no mistake; the Chicago Bears are absolutely horrible against the run this year. However, the beauty of starting Anderson against a Vikings team allowing the seventh-most fantasy points to linebackers this year is that we don't care if Anderson ...
IDP Studs and Duds - Week 11 fantasysharks.com Fri 11/15/13 8:50 AM
Every week during the 2013 season, I'll point out some individual defensive players who could be set to exceed expectations this week (studs) and some that for whatever reason are riskier plays than usual (duds).
This isn't necessarily to say that every "stud" is a must-start (it depends on your other options) or that every "dud" should be glued to your bench (just that the odds of a letdown week are greater than usual).
Only two teams are on a bye in Week 11, with St. Louis and Dallas taking the week off. Get James Laurinaitis and Barry Church out of starting lineups this week.
STUDS
Jared Allen, DE, Minnesota (at Seattle): Allen has been a pretty big disappointment this year, with his five sacks putting him on pace for his lowest total since 2006. With that said, however, this week's tilt against a Seattle team with all kinds of injury issues up front would seem a good opportunity for a rebound performance.
Ndamukong Suh, DT, Detroit (at Pittsburgh): OK, so last week's Mario Williams recommendation blew up in my face against the Steelers. That still isn't stopping me from singing Suh's praises this week against a Pittsburgh team giving up the third-most fantasy points to defensive linemen.
Muhammad Wilkerson, DE, New York Jets (at Buffalo): Wilkerson has already tallied as many sacks in 2013 as he did in 2011 and 2012 combined, including a sack in five consecutive games. Odds are good that becomes six in a row this week against a Buffalo team allowing the most fantasy points to defensive linemen this year.
James Anderson, OLB, Chicago (vs. Baltimore): With Lance Briggs on the shelf, Anderson has become the de facto leader of the Chicago linebackers. That bodes well for his IDP prospects in Week 11, as Baltimore has been the friendliest fantasy matchup for linebackers in Fantasy Sharks Default IDP Scoring this season.
Nick Roach, MLB, Oakland (at Houston): Roach has been a steady (if unspectacular) IDP option of late, with 12 solos and a sack over the past two games. The seventh-year veteran has a good shot at bettering that production Sunday against Houston, who is the second-best IDP matchup for opposing linebackers in 2013.
Philip Wheeler, OLB, Miami (vs. San Diego): Wheeler has been good but not great for the Dolphins this year, with the 28-year-old on pace to top 110 tackles. Wheeler should have no problems keeping that pace up this week against San Diego, who has surrendered the third-most fantasy points to linebackers this season.

2013 IDP WAIVER WIRE - Week 3 fantasysharks.com Tue 9/17/13 8:00 AM
Week 2 of the 2013 fantasy football campaign has come and gone. With any luck, your team is sitting at 2-0 as you bask in the warm glow of another big win. Or, if you're like me in the Deathmatch IDP Showcase League here at Fantasy Sharks, or The WALL IDP-only Showcase League , you're sitting at 0-2 and wondering just what the hell happened.
Maybe injuries have ravaged your team (Deathmatch). Maybe you've just had the misfortune of running into two teams who posted huge scores (The WALL). Or maybe the universe just hates you (every other aspect of my life).
Whatever the reason, an 0-2 hole isn't the end of the world, and it's time to circle the wagons and end those losing streaks. To help you do so, here's a look at some individual defensive players you should consider adding to your squad in Week 3.
PICKUP OF THE WEEK
James Anderson, OLB, Chicago: It didn't get the publicity of the signing of D.J. Williams or the strong preseason of youngster Jon Bostic, but the offseason acquisition that's making the biggest impact on the field for the Chicago Bears is the signing of Anderson, a strong-side linebacker. The 29-year-old, who posted more than 125 total tackles in both 2010 and 2011 for the Carolina Panthers, is playing in an every-down role for the Bears, and coming off a nine-tackle effort against the Minnesota Vikings. Anderson is this week's top pickup for linebacker-needy IDP squads.
WEEK 3 WAIVER WIRE PICKUPS
Jason Hunter, DE, Oakland: The release of Andre Carter just before the season thrust Hunter into the starting lineup for the Raiders. To this point the journeyman has made the most of that opportunity. The seventh-year pro has tallied nine total tackles in two games, adding a sack in each contest. No one is going to confuse Hunter with J.J. Watt any time soon, but IDP owners looking to add some depth on the defensive front could do worse.
Sheldon Richardson, DE, New York Jets: Some weeks the waiver wire is chock full of low-hanging fruit. In other weeks the tree is rather bare. The latter is the case in Week 3 where defensive linemen are concerned, but that doesn't mean there's nothing out there. Rookie Sheldon Richardson has only posted half a sack through two games, but the former Missouri star has managed to post 12 total tackles so far this season. That fantasy production isn't eye-popping, but the knowledge that Richardson can get you at least a handful of tackles makes the 294-pounder a serviceable bye week or injury fill-in.
...
IDP Sleepers - Week 7 fantasysharks.com Fri 10/19/12 7:00 AM
Wow. With six teams on a bye this week, finding sleeper candidates was going to be an adventure, and the injuries suffered by big name defenders has made it even more fun. Figuring out what defenses are going to do in an effort to replace their injured starters is always an adventure, and some situations remain in flux and will require careful observing in the next couple of weeks.
That's why I love Individual Defensive Player (IDP) formats and the mysteries that it offers up on a weekly basis. Here are some Week 7 sleeper options that are primed for big fantasy outings.
LINEBACKERS
Zach Brown, OLB, Tennessee at Buffalo: Brown has been playing more physical of late and has put up eight solo tackles and a pass defended in the last two games. The Bills do not represent the best fantasy matchup for linebackers but they do run an offense that lends itself to an athletic player like Brown garnering more snaps. He could have a sneaky good fantasy week while chasing down Fred Jackson and C.J. Spiller.
James Anderson, OLB, Carolina vs. Dallas: Anderson has been a productive fantasy option the last couple of seasons and started 2012 on a nice pace as well. In Weeks 4 and 5, he saw his snap count dip into the mid-40s range for Carolina, and that makes him sleeper material. The whole Panthers defense has struggled and they seem to be reaching for the best linebacker combination from week-to-week. Look for Anderson to have a surprisingly good fantasy week as he works his way back into the Carolina base defense. The Cowboys will afford Anderson plenty of opportunity to put up tackles (he has 37 total to date) as well as get some big plays on his 2012 resume.
Victor Butler, OLB, Dallas at Carolina: Butler has played well while filling in for Anthony Spencer and looks to fill-in for him again in Week 7. He put up five solo tackles last week and also knocked a pass down. Butler has yet to post a sack, but he does have three quarterback hurries over the past three weeks and is an adequate pass rushing option. He's solid against the run, and while he is not as explosive as Spencer off the edge, he can bring efficient pressure. Look for a good fantasy week for Butler as the Panthers offense offers up tackle and big play opportunities for linebackers. Should Spencer actually play this week, insert him into this sleeper spot.
Kavell Conner, ILB, Indianapolis vs. Cleveland: Conner remains fantasy relevant until Pat Angerer finally returns from injury. After a ...
IDP Studs and Duds - Week 5 fantasysharks.com Fri 10/5/12 9:00 AM
We've hit Week 5 of the 2012 NFL season, and with the bye weeks now in full swing, Individual Defensive Player (IDP) teams run the gamut, from 4-0 juggernauts to 0-4 junkpiles, with squads of all shapes and sizes in between.
Last week's recommendations ran the gamut as well. I hit paydirt with my recommendation to give Miami Dolphins defensive end Cameron Wake one more shot, my advice to do the same with defensive end Michael Bennett of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers didn't work out so well.
It's with that knowledge that you win some and lose others that I roll out another week of IDP Studs and Duds, where I'll point out some players who could be set to exceed expectations this week (studs) and some that for whatever reason are riskier plays than usual (duds).
That isn't necessarily to say that every "stud" is a must-start (it depends on your other options) or that every "dud" should be glued to your bench (just that the odds of a letdown week are greater than usual).
Also, it's the second of the bye weeks, so IDPs from the Dallas Cowboys, Oakland Raiders, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Detroit Lions will all be taking the week off. Keep them on your bench.
Finally, before we get on with the show, if you have a specific IDP start/sit question, you'd like my take on, you can email me at askgary@fantasysharks.com or post the question in the "Kilroyz Krystal Ball" thread in the Fantasy Sharks IDP Forum. I can't promise I'll get to every question, but I'll do the best I can.
STUDS
John Abraham, DE , Atlanta (at Washington): The 13th-year veteran is coming off his best game of the season, with five tackles and a sack last week against the Carolina Panthers, and Washington has been a friendly fantasy matchup for defensive linemen, with the Redskins allowing the fourth-most fantasy points to the position.
Chris Clemons, DE, Seattle (at Carolina): Clemons came back to earth last week after a huge game against the Green Bay Packers, but the ninth-year pro should rebound against a Carolina Panthers squad giving up the sixth-most fantasy points to opposing defensive linemen.
Elvis Dumervil, DE, Denver (at New England): After a slow start to the season, Dumervil's play has picked up of late, with 2½ sacks in his last two games. That hot streak should continue Sunday when the Broncos face the New England Patriots, who have been a favorable IDP matchup for defensive linemen so far in 2012.
James Anderson, OLB, Carolina (vs. Seattle ): Once again injuries have led to ...
