Should You Draft Him?: NFC West WRs and TEs fantasysharks.com Wed 7/23/14 8:00 AM

Just a quick warning: All four starting running backs and all four defenses in this division are good, and those are pretty much the two traits that are the least conducive to scoring fantasy points through the air. Actually, a division that contains the likes of Larry Fitzgerald , Anquan Boldin , Stevie Johnson, Brandon Lloyd and Sidney Rice is hands down the best receiving division of 2014. I was certain that the New York Jets had built the greatest offense of 2014 when they signed Michael Vick and Chris Johnson this offseason, but these NFC West squads aren't going down without a fight. Kidding aside, the receiving targets of the NFC West are a pretty run of the mill field with only one sure-thing top stud ( Vernon Davis ) and only one high-risk high-upside player ( Percy Harvin ). The rest of the crop is safe and unextraordinary, but safe players who reliably fill out your lineup as injuries and byes take their toll are vital to your success as a fantasy owner, so pay attention, and ask only one simple question: Should you draft him? (ADP = average draft position. It is based on current data from 12-team mock drafts) Seattle Seahawks Percy Harvin (ADP: Mid-Round 4): Let's get the biggest question mark out of the way first. Percy Harvin is an electrifying, ridiculously versatile threat who, if healthy, is the last missing piece that would make the Seahawks completely unstoppable. With that insane defense, Marshawn Lynch , Russell Wilson's pass/rush dual threat, and Harvin's rush/catch dual threat, opposing teams are basically helpless. There's just the teensy problem of Harvin only playing in 10 games over the last two seasons, with pretty much his entire 2013 regular season going up in smoke thanks to hip surgery. However, he did manage to get through his first three seasons in the league with only three missed games and he's only 26 years old. I hate using early draft picks on overly risky running backs because serviceable replacements can't be found in later rounds, but gambling on a player like Harvin isn't as bad, since reliable lineup fillers like Kendall Wright can be had later as an insurance policy. Okay, I've convinced myself. I say go for it. Should You Draft Him: Yes. Doug Baldwin/Jermaine Kearse (ADP: Undrafted): Doug Baldwin is a good player who serves an important, reliable role in Seattle's offense, and Kearse put up the occasional big play last year, but there isn't any real fantasy appeal here. Both players would ...

Doug Baldwin: A Bargain For The Seahawks, A Bargain For You rotoviz.com Mon 6/2/14 3:08 PM

Recently, Doug Baldwin and the Seahawks worked out a contract extension that keeps him in Seattle through 2016. Baldwin isn't the kind of guy who typically gets a lot of ink dedicated to him, which is actually kind of strange.... Read more ›

Rock and a Hard Place - Week 14 fantasysharks.com Fri 12/6/13 5:30 AM

Below, I'll list a player with some upside for this week, their Week 14 matchup, and the percentage of leagues in which he is owned according to our friends at fleaflicker.com . DISCLAIMER - The hope is that you don't find yourself in a situation like this. The hope is that you dodge the bullet. But hope won't help you come Sunday. Let's move on to this week's targets, keeping in mind that these aren't every week starters. Instead, these are guys that should only be used if you're in some kind of roster emergency. In case of emergency, break glass. Quarterback Josh McCown vs. Dallas -- 28 percent. McCown will get at least one more start, as Jay Cutler has been ruled out for this week's Monday Night showdown with Dallas. McCown has filled in nicely in Cutler's absence, and he's topped 350 yards passing and two touchdowns in each of his last two games. This week, he faces a Dallas defense that has been one of the most vulnerable against the pass this season. Our site projects McCown to keep it up, with 325 yards passing and three scores. I think he can hit those numbers, but even if McCown falls slightly short, he'll still have quite a day. Ryan Fitzpatrick at Denver -- 21 percent. Fitzpatrick struggled last week in Indianapolis. But that shouldn't be held against him here. I mean ... he is Ryan Fitzpatrick . But this week, he'll face a Denver team that will obviously put up points, meaning Fitzpatrick will get plenty of opportunities to make plays. And because they've gotten leads early, the Broncos defense has given up plenty of points to opposing fantasy quarterbacks. We've projected 255 yards and two touchdowns for Fitzpatrick on Sunday in Denver, and I think you could do a lot worse Running Back LeGarrette Blount vs. Cleveland -- 15 percent. It seems that coach Bill Belichick is implementing some sort of double standard in his backfield. While Stevan Ridley is still in the doghouse with his fumbling issues, Blount has apparently been forgiven. As a result, Ridley can't be trusted at all going forward, but Blount is now the best bet for a rushing score in New England. Despite facing a tough Cleveland run defense, we've projected 40 yards on the ground and a score, and that seems reasonable. Chris Ogbonnaya at New England -- 18 percent. Even with Willis McGahee having a nice Week 13, Ogbonnaya is still the best bet for running back touches in Cleveland. This week, the Browns face a New England team that will attempt to get out in front early, ...

The Lowdown - Week 10 fantasysharks.com Sat 11/9/13 5:00 AM1 Comment

Welcome to The Lowdown for Week 10. This is my little corner of the fantasy football universe -- feel free to pull up a chair and stay a while! Leadership Voids Last week saw two NFL head coaches go down for the count: Denver's John Fox underwent open heart surgery, while Houston's Gary Kubiak collapsed during halftime of the Sunday night game against Indianapolis, due to what doctors later termed a "mini-stroke." Happily, both men seem to be on their way to a full recovery. The incidents have spurred a lot of talk this week about the harsh lifestyle NFL coaches lead: 18-hour days, six days a week; sleeping in their offices; the almost-constant physical and mental pressures to be successful. Some pundits have even suggested that the NFL begin to regulate coaches' behavior, to force them to dial it back a bit. My opinion here is that all the do-gooders and reformers need to chill out. NFL coaches are not indentured servants; they chose their profession and all the associated risk that entails. It is not -- and should not -- be the responsibility of the NFL or anyone else to determine how much effort these guys put in to their jobs. It's no different from medical residents or investment bankers, other professions with tons of pressure (and high payoffs). When I was working on Wall Street in the late 1980s and early 1990s, it was par for the course to work 18-20 hour days, seven days a week. We'd work in our offices until we passed out, get 3-4 hours sleep on a cot by our desks, wake up, grab a coffee and a shower, and then start all over again. To this day, I can only sleep 4-5 hours a night. But my point is that it was our choice ... we did what we did to get ahead, to make some good money to take care of our families or to fly to Las Vegas for some wild partying. No one forced us to do what we did and we loved doing it. I understand that the reformers out there have good intentions, but we need to stop being a nation of nannies; let's keep our noses out of other people's business, OK? Interesting Players for Week 10 Not necessarily the players in line for the biggest games this week, but rather some players that caught my interest and upon whom I shall cast my gaze ... Terrelle Pryor, QB, Oakland (vs. New York Giants): The Giants are coming off a bye week following their first two wins of the season. They're getting back running back Andre Brown. The defense played well in their two victories. Are things starting to look up a bit for them? ...

2012 Conference Championships: Turnovers and Tight Ends fantasysharks.com Sat 1/21/12 1:06 AM

Welcome to the Conference Championship edition of the Brew Crew Corner. Two games this week will decide who will go to the Super Bowl. Last weekend it was turnovers that sunk three teams while tight ends decided some other games. The Houston Texans threw three interceptions and a lost a fumble, the New Orleans Saints threw two interceptions and lost three fumbles, while the Green Bay Packers had one interception and lost three fumbles in their loss. Not taking care of the football gave the other teams additional opportunities, and it cost these three teams dearly. I've never seen a year where we've had so many stud tight ends playing in the playoffs, and last weekend we saw four tight ends dominate in games. For the New England Patriots, Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez destroyed the Denver Broncos. Gronkowski had 145 yards and three touchdowns while Hernandez had four receptions for 55 yards and one touchdown, and he added five carries for 55 yards. In San Francisco, Vernon Davis had seven catches for 180 yards and two touchdowns as he out performed Jimmy Graham, who had five receptions for 103 yards and two touchdowns. Tight ends will definitely be a factor in the Conference Championship games. Look for Jake Ballard and even Dennis Pitta to have key grabs this weekend. Last week we analyzed the value of the running backs for 2011. This week we will look at the wide receivers for this season.
