Williams was released by the Buccaneers on Tuesday. Williams, who did not play Sunday after signing with the Buccaneers last week, was replaced on the roster by WR/KR Solomon Patton.

Williams will provide tight end depth for Tampa Bay while the status of Austin Seferian-Jenkins (back) remains cloudy. He last saw NFL snaps in 2012 with the Packers, when he caught seven passes on 15 targets for 57 yards over 13 games. Williams will serve primarily as a blocker, likely limiting his fantasy impact.

Williams has been released by the Patriots, the Boston Herald reports. Williams, who was a candidate to work as a depth TE behind Rob Gronkowski and Michael Hoomanawanui, hasn't practiced since suffering a right leg injury Aug. 5 and is thought to be about a week and a half away from practicing. Once he is healthy, the report suggests that Williams could be a candidate to re-join the Patriots.

The Patriots' website considers D.J. Williams a long shot to make New England's 53-man roster. Williams is the Patriots' top "move" tight end, but his roster spot won't be guaranteed if Rob Gronkowski (knee) is available for Week 1. Michael Hoomanawanui is a lock to return after re-signing to a two-year deal in March and New England likes blocking FB/TE James Develin. Williams is the only player capable of playing the "F" position in the Patriots' offense and should push for a role in two tight-end sets if he makes the team.

D.J. Williams is currently the top "move" tight end on the Patriots. In other words, the Patriots don't have anyone to play the "F" position once held by Aaron Hernandez. Williams is a borderline NFL player with nine catches in 35 career games. Tom Brady projects to use a three-wide formation featuring Julian Edelman, Danny Amendola and Aaron Dobson as his base.
