Former Bears and Panthers S Chris Harris announced his retirement from football. A 2005 sixth-round pick out of Louisiana-Monroe, Harris is hanging 'em up at age 30 after NFL eight seasons. A proficient ball stripper in his prime, Harris forced 14 fumbles, including eight in 2007 with Carolina. He chipped in 16 career interceptions. Although Harris never made a Pro Bowl, he was a playmaking strong safety and seven-game starter on Chicago's 2006 Super Bowl team.

Jaguars signed S Chris Harris. CB Kevin Rutland was waived to clear a roster spot. An eight-year veteran, Harris appeared in 11 games between the Bears and Lions last season, making eight starts. He intercepted five passes as a 16-game starter in 2010. With the Jags thin at safety, Harris will see time on defense, but could also contribute on special teams.

Lions FS Chris Harris (concussion, neck) has been cleared to practice. Harris says he's ready to play Saturday. He will likely draw another start, as Louis Delmas (knee scope) has yet to practice this week.

Lions S Chris Harris was forced from Sunday's game against the Raiders in the first quarter with an apparent neck injury. Harris was trucked by Michael Bush, snapping his head back on a helmet-to-helmet hit. He appeared to be lucid on the sidelines but ended up walking to the locker room with trainers.

Coach Jim Schwartz confirmed that Chris Harris will serve as the No. 3 safety and a special teamer. Erik Coleman started off the year in that role and then went down with an ankle injury. Next up was Vinny Fuller, who was lost for the season due to an elbow injury last week. Harris will only have an impact on defense if injuries strike starting strong safety Amari Spievey.

Lions claimed S Chris Harris off waivers from the Bears. The intradivision move gives Detroit more depth at safety, where the team has struggled with injuries. Harris probably isn't going to pass SS Amari Spievey as a starter, but could eventually prove a better backup option than special teamer John Wendling. Regardless, it's a low-impact transaction.

Former Bears SS Chris Harris would like to end up with the Broncos or Panthers if he goes unclaimed on waivers. Harris played for Broncos coach John Fox in Carolina from 2007-2009, and maintains a good relationshiop with former Bears DC and current Panthers coach Ron Rivera. Both teams have younger secondaries and struggling run defenses, though if they really want Harris they will likely put in a waiver claim. A liability in pass coverage, interest in Harris is unlikely to be robust.

Bears waived SS Chris Harris, sources tell beat writer Vaughn McClure. Harris was permitted to seek a trade prior to the deadline, but said he would stick it out in Chicago as a backup after finding no takers. He then started last week's game against the Bucs with Major Wright (hip) a late scratch. Apparently, the Bears have simply now had enough. Harris was a second-team All-Pro selection last season, but has been getting abused in coverage this year. He was set to become a free agent at the end of this season anyway.

Bears GM Jerry Angelo said he doesn't expect to trade SS Chris Harris before Tuesday's 4pm ET deadline. Harris was granted permission to seek a trade, but the best the Bears could get is a late-round pick. Angelo probably sees more value in keeping Harris as depth despite his waning production. "We're all on the same page now," according to Angelo.

The Bears have granted SS Chris Harris' agent permission to explore a trade. Harris' representatives are going to find that there isn't much of a market for a 29-year-old safety that is a major liability in coverage. At best, he'll fetch a conditional late-round pick. Harris is trying to land somewhere he'll actually be active so he can put something decent on tape ahead of free agency.
