Powell could play a complementary role to starter Matt Forte this season, NJ.com reports.

EDGE Analysis

Powell took over the backfield at the end of last season when Forte was out injured, and while he played well enough for many to think he could win the starting job this year, NJ.com is apparently not believing it. Whether Powell wins the starting job or not, both backs, plus rookie Elijah McGuire, figure to split touches, which obviously limits their respective upsides.

New offensive coordinator John Morton expects to use Powell and Matt Forte (knee) in a committee, NJ.com's Daryl Slater reports.

EDGE Analysis

The 28-year-old Powell and 31-year-old Forte make for an unconventional duo, with both largely valued for their work catching passes out of the backfield. Forte served as the lead runner for the majority of last season, while Powell handled most of the snaps on obvious passing downs and also took on a larger share of carries as the year progressed. Coming off a season in which he averaged 5.5 yards per carry compared to Forte's 3.7, Powell seems primed to supplant the elder statesmen as the top commodity in New York's backfield. Forte made it clear he wants to be more involved in the passing game, even if it means ceding more carries to Powell. Based on last season's results -- Forte produced 6.1 yards per target and Powell only 5.2 -- such an approach would make a lot of sense.

Powell rushed 22 times for 122 yards and caught all three of his targets for 15 receiving yards and a touchdown during Sunday's 30-10 win over the Bills. He finishes the season with 131 carries for 722 yards and three touchdowns and 58 catches for 388 receiving yards and two scores.

EDGE Analysis

Powell played very well down the stretch in place of the injured Matt Forte (knee), rushing for over 120 yards in two of his last four games. Forte is expected back next season, so it's tough to see Powell getting enough opportunities to be a major fantasy contributor, though if Forte falls victim to the injury bug again, Powell has the ability to take over.

Powell (knee/illness) is slated to start in place of Matt Forte in Sunday's game against the Bills.

EDGE Analysis

Fellow RBs Brandon Wilds and Brandon Burks are also on hand, but Powell will give it a go Sunday as long as his knee holds up.

Powell (knee/illness) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Bills.

EDGE Analysis

Meanwhile, ESPN's Rich Cimini indicates that it's his sense that Powell will "try to play" Sunday, but that's not a lock to occur. With Matt Forte out and Brandon Wilds (hamstring) also questionable, Brandon Burks was notably the only Jets' running back to practice fully Friday.

Powell (knee) didn't practice Thursday.

EDGE Analysis

Matt Forte also sat Thursday's practice, with the status of both backs worth monitoring as Friday's final Week 17 injury report approaches. If one or both end up out or limited Sunday against the Bills, added opportunities would be on tap for Brandon Wilds and Brandon Burks.

Powell (knee) didn't practice Wednesday.

EDGE Analysis

The same applies to Matt Forte, who was inactive in Week 16. More on Powell's status no later than Thursday, but as long as he and Forte are banged up, Brandon Wilds and Brandon Burks profile as the 4-11 Jets' top healthy running backs.

Powell carried 15 times for 60 yards and caught two of three targets for another 14 yards in Saturday's 41-3 loss to the Patriots.

EDGE Analysis

Powell started with Matt Forte (knee, shoulder) sidelined and produced a respectable 4.0 yards per carry despite a miserable showing by the Jets offense as a whole. He has produced 138.3 scrimmage yards per game over the last three and could enjoy a more effective performance next week against the Bills if he is once again relied upon to start in place of Forte.

With Matt Forte inactive, Powell will start Saturday's game against the Patriots.

EDGE Analysis

With steady rain potentially on tap Saturday, Powell figures to remain busy while heading the Jets' Week 16 backfield. Meanwhile, Khiry Robinson and Brandon Wilds are on hand to provide depth. Over his last two games, Powell has combined for 45 carries for 229 rushing yards and two TDs, to go along with 16 catches for 112 receiving yards.

Powell rushed 16 times for 84 yards, and added 11 catches for 78 yards on 12 targets in Saturday's 34-13 loss to Miami.

EDGE Analysis

Fellow running back Matt Forte (knee) was active, but mostly rode the bench as Powell served in a three-down role. Powell was heavily involved as a receiver in addition to his rushing workload, with five catches in the first quarter alone. He out-gained Forte 84-21 on the ground, and came up just two receiving yards short of leading the Jets in both rushing and receiving.
