Speaking in a Monday radio interview, Seahawks coach Pete Carroll admitted the Seahawks might re-sign free agent CB Antoine Winfield. "He's knows his way around," Carroll said wryly. Winfield would be an excellent stopgap for a team missing Brandon Browner (groin) and Walter Thurmond III (suspension), but the price would have to be right for Winfield to end his "retirement." He's not going to chase a championship out of the goodness of his heart.

Sources tell FOX Sports that the Seahawks have contacted free agent CB Antoine Winfield. It's a no-brainer move for the Seahawks. Brandon Browner (groin) is out indefinitely and Walter Thurmond has been suspended four games for violating the league's substance-abuse policy. Winfield, now 36 years old, spent training camp with the Seahawks but said he was retiring word broke that he was going to be released. The chance to go to the Super Bowl could entice the three-time Pro Bowler to lace up the cleats again.

ESPN's Josina Anderson reports "retired" CB Antoine Winfield is working out in Houston and considering a return to "the right situation." Winfield never filed his retirement papers after he announced his retirement. He spent the summer with the Seahawks, but Seattle was preparing to release the 36-year-old at final cuts before he hung up the cleats. The Vikings and Redskins hotly pursued Winfield along with Seattle, but those two teams are a combined 1-5. Those wouldn't seem to be ideal situations for Winfield. Contenders that could use an upgrade at slot corner are the Ravens, Texans, and Saints.

Vikings coach Leslie Frazier told reporters before Sunday's opener that he would "welcome" a chance to reunite with free agent CB Antoine Winfield. Winfield hasn't officially retired and at least one team has "checked in" since he was released by the Seahawks. The Vikings saved $7.25 million by releasing Winfield in the offseason, but he was an effective slot corner in Minnesota's defense last season and could be brought back if he's willing to return.

CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora reports the Seahawks are preparing to release CB Antoine Winfield. Per La Canfora, the Seahawks may dangle Winfield as trade bait on Saturday, but in all likelihood will end up severing ties. The Seahawks are a strict best-player-plays team -- that's Pete Carroll's mantra -- and they are excited about Walter Thurmond III as well as Jeremy Lane behind starters Brandon Browner and Richard Sherman. The Redskins and Vikings hotly pursued Winfield back in April. The Broncos were also rumored to have interest.

The website Pro Football Focus has credited Seahawks CB Antoine Winfield with zero touchdown passes allowed over the past three seasons. Winfield is 36 years old and Father Time remains undefeated, but he's been an incredibly effective slot corner when healthy. Winfield has played in 37 games the past three years, and PFF has also considered him the NFL's premier run-support cornerback during that stretch. With Brandon Browner and Richard Sherman outside and Winfield inside, Seattle has a good chance to field the NFL's stoutest sub-package cornerback trio in 2013.

Antoine Winfield accepted $2 million less in guaranteed money to sign with the Seahawks. The Vikings reportedly offered Winfield a fully guaranteed one-year, $3 million contract to return. He turned them down and accepted a $2 million deal from the Seahawks that contains just $1 million guaranteed. "They have an opportunity to do something that I dream about every night and that's win a championship," Winfield said. "...I don't have too much time left. This is Year 15 for me so I'm trying to get it this year."

The Seahawks plan to use Antoine Winfield as strictly a nickel back, giving him around 600 defensive snaps. He played 1,100 in Minnesota last season. Winfield is plenty capable of starting games at left cornerback, but the Seahawks want him in the slot, wreaking havoc on inside receivers and ball carriers closer to the line of scrimmage. He's also a quality insurance policy should LCB Richard Sherman suffer injury.
