Smith (personal) will play and start Monday's game against the 76ers, Joe Vardon of Cleveland.com reports.

EDGE Analysis

Smith found out about the death of his cousin early Monday morning, which in turn resulted in his absence from shootaround. However, as expected, Smith is not going to miss any time and will take on his usual role in the starting lineup at shooting guard. Smith shouldn't be on any restrictions Monday.

Smith missed the Cavaliers' morning shootaround while tending to a personal matter, but is expected to rejoin the team in advance of Monday's game against the 76ers, Joe Vardon of Cleveland.com reports.

EDGE Analysis

Smith learned of the death of his cousin early Monday and is presumably spending time with his family before reporting back to the Cavaliers. Cedi Osman worked out with the starting five at shootaround and would presumably receive the nod at shooting guard if Smith is unable to make it back to the team is time. Smith has struggled to a 35.5 percent mark from the field and 30.8 percent success rate from downtown in 19 games this season, but did provide his second-best scoring output of the campaign (16 points) in the Cavaliers' last game Friday against the Hornets.

Smith contributed 20 points (7-12 FG, 5-7 3Pt, 1-2 FT), one rebound and one steal across 36 minutes during a 124-119 win over the Bucks on Tuesday.

EDGE Analysis

Smith's 20 points and five three-pointers made easily marked season highs after what had been a rough start to the season for him. During the first 11 games, he is shooting a miserable 33.3 percent from the field. Smith will likely start shooting the ball a little better, but even during his best games, he does not provide much other than points and three-pointers.

Smith (back) will play and start in Tuesday's matchup against the Bulls, Marla Ridenour of the Akron Beacon Journal reports.

EDGE Analysis

Smith was held out of the team's morning shootaround because of a sore back, but it appears that it wasn't anything overly serious and he should be good to go Tuesday. Look for Smith to make his first start of the season at shooting guard after the Cavaliers collectively decided that it was more beneficial to bring Dwyane Wade off the bench and insert Smith into the top unit to bring some much-needed outside shooting to space the floor.

Smith did not participate in shootaround due to a sore back and is questionable for Tuesday's game against the Bulls, Dave McMenamin of ESPN.com reports.

EDGE Analysis

The Cavaliers are hopeful that Smith's back will be able to loosen up by tip-off, but there appears to be at least a little doubt regarding his status. Smith was recently given back his starting shooting guard role and was set to make his first start of the season Tuesday, but in the event that he is unable to play, Dwyane Wade would likely start at that spot once again.

Smith will move into the starting lineup for Tuesday's game against the Bulls, Dave McMenamin of ESPN reports.

EDGE Analysis

In a move that probably should have been made a week earlier, the Cavs will reinsert Smith into the starting five at shooting guard, while Dwyane Wade shifts to the bench. While both Wade and Smith have their deficiencies, Smith is a markedly better three-point shooter and a better defender at this stage in his career. After parting ways with an excellent outside shooter in Kyrie Irving this summer, the Cavs are desperate for floor-spacers in the backcourt, and that's exactly what Smith will bring. The 32-year-old has struggled thus far -- 2-13 3PT -- but he's a career 37.3 percent shooter from deep -- a drastic upgrade over Wade's career mark (28.7% 3PT).

Smith will enter the starting lineup for Friday's preseason finale against the Magic, Marla Ridenour of the Akron Beacon Journal reports.

EDGE Analysis

LeBron James continues to deal with a sore left ankle, so he'll get the night off on Friday. As a result, coach Tyronn Lue will push Dwyane Wade over to small forward, with Smith entering the top unit at shooting guard. Smith should see a temporary uptick in minutes, though he's already been confirmed to be opening the year in a bench role, so once James is back to full strength, look for Smith to operate as one of the first reserves off the bench.

Smith will come off the bench this season with Dwyane Wade officially being named the starting shooting guard, Dave McMenamin of ESPN.com reports.

EDGE Analysis

While Smith served as a primary starter through his three seasons in Cleveland, coming off the bench is nothing new for the 32-year-old. Smith made a living coming off the bench during his time in New York and even won the Sixth Man of the Year award with the team in 2013. While Smith heading to the bench limits the floor spacing of the Cavaliers' starting unit, the streaky jump shooter should help bolster the team's bench production for this coming season.

Smith will sit out Sunday's preseason matchup against the Wizards for rest, Dave McMenamin of ESPN reports.

EDGE Analysis

The Cavaliers will hold out nine players on Sunday, with the majority just getting the night off for rest. Look for Smith to rejoin the lineup ahead of Tuesday's game against the Bulls. With Dwyane Wade (rest) and Iman Shumpert (foot) also out, look for Kyle Korver to pick up more minutes at shooting guard, while some guys like Jeff Green and Richard Jefferson could have to play out of position as well.

Smith will start Wednesday's preseason game against the Hawks, Cavs play-by-play announcer John Michael reports.

EDGE Analysis

The Cavaliers are set to be without LeBron James (ankle) Wednesday, so both Dwyane Wade and J.R. Smith with start at shooting guard and small forward. It remains to be seen which player will ultimately start alongside James on the wing once he's healthy, so that should continue to be monitored over the rest of the preseason.
