Thornburg (shoulder) has yet to step foot on the mound this spring and is a likely candidate to begin the 2018 season on the disabled list, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.

EDGE Analysis

Yet again, Thornburg can't seem to shake the should problem that has given him issues for the past 11 months. He landed on the DL last April and underwent surgery to treat thoracic outlet syndrome in June after hitting a roadblock in his rehab. It appeared as though Thornburg would be healthy heading into spring camp after stating that he believed he could have a normal spring just last month, but that clearly isn't the case. Besides getting back to full health it remains to be seen whether he will be effective after undergoing this procedure, which has derailed other pitchers in the past.

Thornburg, who underwent thoracic outlet syndrome surgery in June, believes he can have a normal spring training and be ready by Opening Day, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.

EDGE Analysis

Thornburg has reportedly been progressing well through his throwing program, which he picked up Oct. 2, and has his sights set on the start of the 2018 campaign. That said, even if the southpaw is ready by Opening Day, he noted he may not be available to pitch on consecutive days right away, according to Tim Britton of The Providence Journal. Given the issues other pitchers have had following the same procedure, Thornburg's effectiveness remains to be seen, though the 29-year-old could prove to be a vital part of Boston's bullpen during the upcoming season if he's able to regain his pre-surgery form (2.15 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 90:25 K:BB in 67 innings with the Brewers in 2016).

Thornburg agreed to a one-year, non-guaranteed deal with the Red Sox on Monday, avoiding arbitration, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports.

EDGE Analysis

After being acquired from the Brewers prior to the 2017 season, Thornburg missed all of last year after undergoing surgery to treat thoracic outlet syndrome in mid-June. He's expected to be healthy heading into spring training, and the southpaw could prove to be a crucial bullpen piece for the Red Sox if he's able to regain his 2016 form (2.15 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 90:25 K:BB in 67 innings with Milwaukee).

Thornburg (shoulder) was reinstated from the 60-day disabled list Thursday, The Boston Globe's Pete Abraham reports.

EDGE Analysis

Thornburg hasn't stepped foot on the mound yet in a Red Sox uniform, and missed the entire 2017 season after undergoing surgery to treat his thoracic outlet syndrome in mid-June. He should be ready to go heading into spring training, and could be a valuable weapon out of the team's bullpen if he's able to stay upright and find his form from last year.

Thornburg (shoulder) underwent successful surgery to treat thoracic outlet syndrome and will miss the remainder of the season, Brian MacPherson of the Providence Journal reports.

EDGE Analysis

Thornburg will now begin a long recovery process in hopes of being ready for the 2018 season. His effectiveness following the surgery remains a question mark given the issues other pitchers have had after undergoing the same procedure.

Thornburg (shoulder) will undergo surgery to treat his thoracic outlet syndrome Friday and will miss the remainder of the season, Ryan Hannable of WEEI.com reports.

EDGE Analysis

It seemed like this entire season was one step forward, two steps back for the embattled right-hander, although it seems that the Red Sox finally pinpointed the problem holding Thornburg back. Although he's tabbed to miss the rest of the 2017 season, the Red Sox are confident that he'll be ready to go when the 2018 season comes along. How effective he'll be following the operation remains a mystery, however, as others who have undergone the same surgery (Josh Beckett, Matt Harvey) have not had great results after the fact.

Thornburg paused his throwing program Tuesday after his shoulder began bothering him again, Evan Drellich of CSN New England reports.

EDGE Analysis

This is yet another setback on an already arduous road back to action for Thornburg, who hasn't appeared in a single game for the Red Sox after arriving in a trade from Milwaukee in the offseason. No word on when he'll resume his rehab has come forth, although it's likely safe to say a return to action within this month is unreasonable even though surgery isn't being considered at this time.

Thornburg (shoulder) threw out to 90 feet Wednesday, Evan Drellich of CSN New England reports.

EDGE Analysis

Thornburg, who has been out the entire year with a shoulder impingement, was tossing out to 150 feet earlier in the year before being shut down when some symptoms returned. He resumed his throwing program earlier in the week and has stretched out to 90 feet, though the Red Sox will look to stretch him out to 150 feet again before his first bullpen session. Given his setback earlier in the year, the Sox will likely be patient with the southpaw.

The Red Sox think Thornburg may have a nerve issue with his shoulder, Evan Drellich of CSN New England reports.

EDGE Analysis

The team is attempting to figure out what else is going on with Thornburg's ailing shoulder, as he has not heeled as quickly as expected. He is already on the 60-day DL, and at this point it would not be surprising if he ended up being out through the All-Star break.

Thornburg (shoulder) was transferred to the 60-day disabled list Thursday, Evan Drellich of CSN New England reports.

EDGE Analysis

The Red Sox needed room on the 40-man roster for Thursday's starting pitcher Kyle Kendrick, and with Thornburg still not throwing off a mound, he was the logical choice to bump off the roster for the time being. The latest update on Thornburg's health was that he was long-tossing, which would hopefully put him on track to throw off a mound sometime in the next week or two.
