Thornburg made his first appearance since being acquired by Boston, allowing five runs on four hits and one walk while recording just two outs in Saturday's game against the Twins.

EDGE Analysis

Thornburg's debut in a Red Sox uniform was certainly ugly, but nothing to be concerned about at this stage. The right-hander was lit up during the spring last year only to have a fantastic regular season. Thornburg said the slow start is par for the course in spring training -- he entered Saturday with a 5.77 ERA in 31 career spring training appearances -- and that he needs a good five to six outings to get locked in.

Thornburg agreed to a one-year deal with the Red Sox on Friday, avoiding arbitration.

EDGE Analysis

Terms of the agreement were not available. After notching 13 saves for the Brewers in 2016, Thornburg will be asked to serve as setup man for Craig Kimbrel in Boston this season.

Thornburg's season in 2016 was partly influenced by a new, lower arm slot, Brian MacPherson of the Providence Journal reports.

EDGE Analysis

Thornburg didn't set out to change his arm slot, but the lower slot came about as the right-handed reliever established a rhythm in his mechanics following an elbow injury. "We never one time talked to him about his arm slot," Brewers pitching coach Derek Johnson said. "It was probably a byproduct of that rhythm and trying to keep everything together and not worrying so much about being on top of the ball as being on time and being behind the ball." With confidence in the elbow, Thornburg started "to figure out things that worked well against hitters and things that didn't." For Boston, Thornburg will work the eighth inning and likely fill in closer when Craig Kimbrel isn't available.

Thornburg was traded Tuesday to the Red Sox in exchange for Travis Shaw and prospects Mauricio Dubon and Josh Pennington, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports.

EDGE Analysis

The Red Sox had to pay a hefty price to secure the services of Thornburg, who was exceptional in middle relief for the Brewers to begin last season before taking over as the club's closer in the second half. In 67 innings, Thornburg posted a 2.15 ERA (2.83 FIP) while striking out 90 batters and yielding a minuscule .161 batting average against. The right-hander figures to take over as the Red Sox's top setup man and should represent an upgrade in that capacity over the aging Koji Uehara, who became a free agent this winter.

Thornburg recorded a four-out save on Thursday, allowing one hit and two walks while striking out two.

EDGE Analysis

The Cubs threatened, but were unable to break through against Thornburg, who did not allow a run to preserve a 5-4 win. The 27-year-old has not allowed an earned run since July 28, lowering his ERA from 2.38 to 1.61 over that stretch. Thornburg has excelled in the closer's role since his predecessor, Jeremy Jeffress, was traded to Texas on Aug. 1, going seven-for-eight in save opportunities while continuing to rack up strikeouts. He's up to 81 whiffs in 61.2 innings this year, establishing himself as one of baseball's best relievers.

Thornburg tossed a perfect ninth against the Cardinals on Wednesday for his sixth save.

EDGE Analysis

The Cards got to see Thornburg in all three games of this series, but after getting an unearned run off him in the opener, they were unable to do anything against the 27-year-old hurler in the next two. Thornburg's looked the part of a stud closer this year, but the cellar-dwelling Brewers have afforded him precious few chances to record saves.

Thornburg struck out two in a perfect ninth to record his fifth save Monday against Colorado.

EDGE Analysis

Thornburg converted his first save opportunity in 12 days and is perfect in three opportunities since the Brewers traded away Jeremy Jeffress and Will Smith. He has allowed just one hit over nine shutout innings in that span with 11 strikeouts against just two walks. Thornburg looks perfectly suited for the closer's role, now the Brewers just have to deliver him some save opportunities.

Thornburg retired the side in order with a strikeout Wednesday against Atlanta for his fourth save.

EDGE Analysis

This has been easily Thornburg's best MLB season, as he's managed to elevate his strikeout rate and lower his WHIP to elite levels, so the payoff of becoming Milwaukee's closer is well deserved. Indeed, he's been especially sharp since the Brewers dealt their top two closing candidates at the deadline. Thornburg has allowed one earned run in his last 17 appearances.

Thornburg struck out two in a clean inning for his third save Tuesday against the Padres.

EDGE Analysis

As most expected, Thornburg stepped into the closer's role following the trades of Jeremy Jeffress and Will Smith at the deadline. He owns sharp 2.27 ERA, and most impressively, he has struck out 61 batters in just 43.2 innings. Thornburg induced three swinging strikes in 14 pitches Tuesday night, a sign he possesses the nasty stuff he'll need to succeed as closer.

Thornburg may be in line for save opportunities following the Brewers' decision to trade Will Smith and Jeremy Jeffress on Monday.

EDGE Analysis

Corey Knebel is another possible candidate to replace Jeffress, who converted all but one save chance during his run as Milwaukee's closer this season. Thornburg has been excellent as part of the bridge to the ninth inning this season, carrying a 59:14 K:BB over 42.2 innings and piling up 20 holds thus far (2.32 ERA, 0.98 WHIP).
