Schumaker will replace Brandon Phillips (illness) in the lineup for Thursday's game against the Braves, C. Trent Rosecrans of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Phillips was in the Reds' original lineup, but he was scratched due to an illness, so Schumaker will start Thursday for the first time since Apr. 19. He will man second base and hit seventh against Braves starter Shelby Miller.

Schumaker is starting in left field and batting leadoff for Sunday night's game in St. Louis. Billy Hamilton is hurt and Marlon Byrd is off to a miserable start, so Schumaker and Brennan Boesch are both in the lineup. That is, if the game goes off as planned - the tarp is currently on the field and rain is in the forecast.

Schumaker replaced Brandon Phillips, who left the game feeling lightheaded after a collision, in Tuesday's game, but didn't get on base in two at bats. After the game, it was unclear how serious Phillips' injury may have been. Schumaker has come off the bench in five games so far this season and is a combined 1-for-6 from the plate with no RBIs and one strikeout.

The Reds are hoping that Schumaker, who ended his 2014 season early with a surgery to repair the torn labrum in his left shoulder, will play more of a supersub role rather than start as frequently as he did in 2014. It's rare to see a player suggest that he needs to play less, but Schumaker is buying the team's party line. "I was telling Jay Bruce the other day that if I play more than starting a few games, we've got problems," Schumaker said. "I expect everybody in our starting lineup to play 150-plus games. If you see the really good teams, very rarely is their starting lineup taking days off."

Schumaker underwent surgery Friday to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. A timetable for Schumaker's recovery was not immediately provided by the team, but the hope is likely that he can get back to full health by spring training. Schumaker's first season in Cincinnati was largely a disappointment, as he hit just .235/.287/.308 with two homers and 22 RBI in 83 games, and the 34-year-old will be little more than a utility player again next season.

Schumaker went 2-for-5 with an RBI in Sunday's loss to the Mets. Schumaker's playing time should start to taper off in September with interleague play over for the Reds and the team clearly out of the hunt. He's hitting .236/.288/.309 for the team. He's signed through the 2015 season.

Reds activated 2B/OF Skip Schumaker from the 7-day concussion disabled list. Schumaker passed his concussion test Saturday and got through workouts Sunday with no issues, clearing the way for his return to action. He's at second base and hitting second for the Reds Sunday.

Skip Schumaker has passed his concussion tests, but has to wait on the league and players association to sign off on the results before he can be activated by the Reds. It sounds as though Schumaker will return to the Reds this weekend, though it doesn't look like it will get done in time for Saturday's afternoon game. Before hitting the DL, he was slashing .240/.287/.315 with a homer and 14 RBI in 47 games.

Skip Schumaker (concussion) has not yet been cleared to return to action. The hope was that Schumaker would be activated for the beginning of the second half, but he was unable to pass a concussion test Thursday. He'll try to take it again Friday.

Skip Schumaker (concussion) has not yet been cleared to return to action. The hope was that Schumaker would be activated for the beginning of the second half, but he's apparently still feeling concussion symptoms and is also dealing with a shoulder issue. Schumaker missed the first month of the season with a dislocated left shoulder, but it's unclear whether his current injury is related to that.
