Jansen will likely be sidelined for a month as he receives treatment for an irregular heartbeat, which will thrust Alexander into an expanded role. Though Maeda is set to receive a chance to close as well, he is starting Friday's game in Colorado and will need a few days to rest before joining the bullpen, so look for Alexander to serve as the club's top ninth-inning option this weekend. Through 52 appearances, Alexander has accumulated a 3.27 ERA and two saves this year.

Alexander picked up the save against the Angels on Friday, working around two hits to fire a scoreless ninth inning and close out the Dodgers' 3-2 victory. He didn't record a strikeout or a walk.

EDGE Analysis

Kenley Jansen got the day off, leaving the door open for Alexander to come in and get his first save of the season. The left-hander is having a solid campaign with a 3.40 ERA in 42.1 innings, but Jansen is one of the best closers in baseball, so this shouldn't be considered more than a spot appearance.

Alexander gave up two hits over a scoreless inning en route to his seventh hold of the season in Monday's 2-1 win over the Cubs.

Alexander has looked like a different pitcher since returning from the minors May 9, posting a 2.01 ERA with 19 strikeouts and six holds over 22.1 innings. With Tony Cingrani (shoulder) still mending on the disabled list, Alexander has taken over as the Dodgers' top left-handed option out of the bullpen.
