CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Orioles recently offered a multi-year extension to Matt Wieters, but a deal doesn't appear imminent. The financial terms aren't known, but the offer was believed to be for five years. Wieters is under team control though 2015, so the Orioles are looking to buy out at least his first two years of free agency. While the two sides aren't close at the moment, the 26-year-old backstop figures to benefit from Buster Posey's recent extension with the Giants.

Matt Wieters homered, doubled and walked twice Tuesday versus the Rays. The two-run homer came in his first at-bat of the season, and both it and the double were off David Price. Wieters also turned in a terrific spring, creating some optimism that this might be the year he breaks through offensively.

Matt Wieters went 2-for-3 and hit a two-run homer as the Orioles topped the Twins 7-1 on Sunday. Maybe this is the year Wieters busts out: he's hitting .500 with three homers, 12 RBI and just two strikeouts in 24 at-bats this spring. The three homers matches his total from the previous three springs combined.

Matt Wieters homered, doubled and drove in five runs against the Phillies on Sunday. One wonders if the Orioles might regret waiting on trying to lock up Wieters for the long haul. He wouldn't have come cheap regardless, but if he takes another step forward offensively this year, his price tag could get a whole lot bigger.

Rich Dubroff of CSN Baltimore believes that the Orioles will wait until next offseason to sign Matt Wieters to a long-term extension. The Orioles avoided arbitration with Wieters by agreeing to a one-year, $5.5 million contract earlier this month, but executive VP Dan Duquette indicated that the organization has plans for a long-term deal. Coming off his second consecutive Gold Glove and a career-high 23 home runs in 2012, Wieters and agent Scott Boras will likely be seeking a contract similar to Joe Mauer's eight-year, $184 million extension with the Twins. Wieters is under team control through 2015, so there's no rush for the sides to get a deal done.

Orioles executive VP Dan Duquette indicated Saturday that the organization would like to pursue the possibility of signing Matt Wieters to a long-term deal. Wieters recently received a $5 million raise through arbitration, setting a new record for a first-year qualifier. The 26-year-old backstop is coming off a season where he bashed 23 home runs and drove home 83 while displaying tremendous leadership skills and winning his second consecutive Gold Glove. The O's would be wise to lock him up as soon as possible because he's going to start getting really expensive anyway.

Orioles avoided arbitration with C Matt Wieters by agreeing to a one-year, $5.5 million contract. He was arbitration-eligible for the first time. With two more arbitration year on the horizon, the Orioles would be wise to seek a long-term deal for Wieters sooner rather than later. The 26-year-old batted .249/.329/.435 with a career-high 23 homers in 2012.

Matt Wieters told the Baltimore Sun that he would be interested in a long-term extension with the Orioles. The Orioles have yet to engage in any extension talks with Wieters, but could look to buyout his arbitration years with a long-term deal. "I've always been interested [in staying]," Wieters said. "I'm a huge fan of what [Buck Showalter and Dan Duquette] have done. It's something to where it's a great baseball town, it's a fun place to play and it's a place where I enjoy playing." Wieters is arbitration-eligible for the first time this winter and under team control through 2015.

The Orioles' Buck Showalter, the Athletics' Bob Melvin and the White Sox' Robin Ventura have been announced as finalists for the American League Manager of the Year award. Ventura was great in his first season managing anywhere, but this will come down to Showalter and Melvin, who both led their teams to surprise playoff appearances. It's possible they could wind up splitting the award. The winner will be announced on November 13.
