Giolito underwent 20 sessions of neurofeedback during the offseason in an effort to improve his breathing and stay relaxed, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
EDGE Analysis
Neurofeedback is a form of biofeedback that uses an individual's brainwaves to teach self-regulation of brain function. Giolito explored this technique as a way to combat early-inning adversity that snowballed on him. "That's what plagued me, those outings in the first two innings I'm already giving up four, five runs, letting it snowball and get away from me,'' Giolito said Thursday. "Getting rid of those, building some consistency as a starting pitcher - I know I have the stuff to do it.'' The 24-year-old right-hander had a 9.00 and 9.60 ERA in the first and second innings, respectively, while walking 45 batters in 62 innings. That early adversity led to an MLB-worst 6.13 ERA among qualified starters and an AL-high 90 walks.

Giolito (10-12) allowed five runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out five over 6.2 innings, taking the loss to the Cubs on Saturday.
EDGE Analysis
Giolito probably deserved a better fate, but left fielder Ryan LaMarre misjudged a liner that helped extend the Cubs' three-run fifth inning. The 24-year-old right-hander has gone five starts without a win, giving up 20 runs, 27 hits, 11 walks and four home runs over 27.1 innings. His final start of the season is expected to be part of a doubleheader Friday against the Twins.

Giolito (10-11) allowed six runs (four earned) on eight hits and two walks while striking out one through six innings, taking the loss Sunday against the Orioles.
EDGE Analysis
Giolito got hit hard early in his outing, surrendering five first-inning runs and then another in the fourth. He'd exit the game with a two-run lead after tossing 61 of 98 pitches for strikes. Through 30 starts in 2018, the 24-year-old has struggled to a 5.77 ERA with a 118:83 K:BB over 165.1 innings. Giolito will search for a better outcome in his next appearance Saturday against the Cubs.

Giolito allowed three runs on six hits and two walks while striking out three in a no-decision Monday against the Royals.
EDGE Analysis
Giolito pitched from behind a lot, throwing first-pitch balls to 16 of 28 batters, but had his sinker working and induced 13 groundball outs to post the fifth quality start in his last six outings. It was a nice bounce back for Giolito, who failed to get out of the second inning in his previous start. The right-hander will look for his first win in four starts Sunday at Baltimore.

Giolito allowed an earned run on two hits and two walks while striking out eight across 6.1 innings Thursday against the Red Sox. He did not factor into the decision.
EDGE Analysis
Giolito held the powerful Red Sox lineup without an extra-base hit and allowed only two runners to reach scoring position. He generated an impressive 14 swinging strikes on his way to matching his highest strikeout total of the season. While Giolito has still been hit hard in a few starts, he has flashed the skillset that made him a hyped pitching prospect only two seasons ago by posting a 4.58 ERA with 47 strikeouts across 47.2 innings in eight post All-Star break starts.

Giolito (10-9) picked up the win Saturday against the Tigers, allowing one run on three hits and one walk while striking out six across seven innings.
EDGE Analysis
Giolito was locked in Saturday, firing 76 of his 106 pitches for strikes in what was one of his best outings this season. The right-hander has now compiled four quality starts in five appearances this month, lowering his ERA to 5.85. The right-hander was blown up for seven runs in his other August start -- which came against the Yankees -- but he's proven serviceable when the matchup is favorable. Giolito is probably best left on the bench with his next start coming against the Red Sox on Thursday.

Giolito (9-9) gave up three runs on five hits and two walks while striking out six in six innings Monday against the Twins. He picked up the win.
EDGE Analysis
He now has quality starts in six of his last eight outings, with a couple blowup starts mixed in. Giolito has lowered his ERA from 6.93 to 6.08 over that stretch, and while he is still a pretty risky play, he can be used in strategic spot starts against weaker lineups down the stretch. Such a matchup is on tap when he faces the Tigers in Detroit on Sunday.

Giolito (7-9) got the loss Wednesday, allowing seven runs on six hits and three walks while striking out two over five innings against the Yankees.
EDGE Analysis
Much of the damage came in a six-run second inning, and the big blow came via a Giancarlo Stanton grand slam -- one of two home runs Giolito yielded. The 24-year-old seemed to be turning a corner of late with quality starts in four of his last five starts prior to Wednesday, but he's now been knocked around for at least five in two of his last three. Wednesday's outing pushes his ERA and WHIP back up to 6.23 and 1.50, respectively, to go along with just 84:71 K:BB over 125.2 innings. Next up is a road start in Detroit on Tuesday.

Giolito allowed one run on two hits and three walks while striking out six over seven-plus innings in Friday's 3-2 extra-inning win over the Rays.
EDGE Analysis
Giolito had pitched brilliantly through seven innings, but gave up a leadoff double to begin the eighth and was pulled after 99 pitches with the White Sox up, 2-0. The bullpen couldn't protect the lead, snatching the win from Giolito. The outing was good enough to get his ERA under six for the first time since April 12, as the right-hander has tossed four quality starts in his last five appearances. His next start comes Tuesday at home against the formidable Yankees.

Giolito (6-8) fired 6.1 scoreless innings Sunday, yielding three walks and two hits while striking out six and earning the win in the 10-1 victory over Kansas City.
EDGE Analysis
Giolito has walked at least three batters in his last four outings, but Sunday was his first scoreless start of 2018. His ERA is still an unsightly 6.18, but that's the lowest it's been since his second start of the season. The 24-year-old has a 63:60 K:BB in 103.1 innings, including a 12:9 across 18.2 innings in July. Giolito will take on the Angels next Tuesday.
