Veras signed a minor league contract with the Astros on Friday. Veras has agreed to rejoin the Astros, with whom he spent most of the 2013-14 campaigns, after being released by the Braves toward the end of spring training. He will report to extended spring training to get ready for game action and will likely head to Triple-A Fresno before long, with the hope of getting the call up within a month or so. It's hard to imagine Veras will see any save chances.

Veras was released by the Braves on Thursday. Veras tallied 46.0 innings in 2014 between time spent with the Cubs and Astros, posting a combined 4.50 ERA and 1.39 WHIP. The 34-year-old right-hander should still have some suitors, though he appears far removed from pitching in high-leverage situations.

Veras signed a minor league contract with the Braves on Tuesday that includes an invite to spring training, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports.Veras turned his 2014 campaign around after signing back on with the Astros in June, as he posted a 3.03 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 10.2 K/9 in 34 appearances with Houston. The right-hander's average fastball velocity dipped again last season (to 93.4 mph) and his walk rate jumped back up to 5.3 BB/9, but Veras' experience should give him an inside track at a bullpen spot. Veras was the second former closer to sign a minor league deal with Atlanta on Tuesday, with Matt Capps being the first.

Veras picked up his first save of the season Wednesday with a scoreless frame against the Yankees. Chad Qualls was unavailable Wednesday due to minor back discomfort, but Veras preserved the 5-2 win for the Astros despite giving up a hit and a walk during the appearance. The veteran reliever earned 21 saves as a member of the Astros and Tigers last season, so he'll likely be used in save situations if Qualls is forced to miss any additional time.

Astros signed RHP Jose Veras to a minor league contract. Veras was released by the Cubs last week but has landed back with the club with which he had the most success. The veteran reliever put up an 8.10 ERA over just 13 1/3 innings this season for Chicago but could conceivably work his way back to being a late-inning option for the Astros. He'll report to the club's spring training complex first before eventually going to Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Cubs released RHP Jose Veras. Veras was designated for assignment by the Cubs a week ago after posting an ugly 8.10 ERA over just 13 1/3 innings this season. The Cubs will be responsible for the remainder of his $3.85 million salary this season and the $150,000 buyout on his option for 2015. He should draw interest around MLB now that he's available at the league minimum.

Cubs designated RHP Jose Veras for assignment. Veras opened the 2014 season as the Cubs' primary closer, but he's now off their 40-man roster after posting an 8.10 ERA in 13 1/3 innings. The 33-year-old right-hander is earning a $4 million salary in 2014 and held a $5.5 million club option for the 2015 campaign.

Cubs activated RHP Jose Veras from the 15-day disabled list. Veras hasn't pitched since April 24 due to an oblique strain. He'll likely return as a setup man to Hector Rondon.

Jose Veras (oblique) tossed a scoreless inning Tuesday in his first rehab appearance at Double-A Tennessee. Veras retired all three batters he faced, throwing seven of his 11 pitches for strikes. He should return to the Cubs' bullpen next week and could quickly push himself back into the mix for save opportunities.
