Molina will undergo a knee surgery that will keep him sidelined for a "long, indefinite period," Fox Sports' Jon Morosi reports. A free agent defensive specialist with a 30-grade hit tool was never going to be on many fantasy radars, but this definitely allows people in super deep leagues to ignore Molina for 2015.

Molina was placed on release waivers Monday, the Tampa Bay Times reports. The move is the last step for Molinaw, who was DFA'd last week, before he becomes a free agent. The 39-year-old is unlikely to be claimed off release waivers by Wednesday and will be in the market for a new team. If he does go unclaimed, the Rays will be responsible for his $2.75 million salary for the 2015 season.

The Rays will designate Molina for assignment Thursday prior to the Rule 5 roster deadline, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Molina, 39, was so atrocious with the bat last season (.417 OPS) that it easily negated his value as a pitch framer and defender behind the plate.
