ESPN Chicago's Bruce Levine reports that Jerry Hairston has opted to retire, ending his 16-year MLB career. Levine also reports Hairston will slide right into a role as an analyst before and after Dodgers games. Hairston, 37, finished 2013 with a .539 OPS in 226 trips to the plate with the Dodgers. He retires with a career .692 OPS in just short of 5,000 plate appearances.

Jerry Hairston Jr. is "a potential fit for the Braves," according to MLB.com beat writer Mark Bowman. "Hairston would be a great clubhouse addition," tweeted Bowman. "But there are injury concerns and he struggled when he was primarily used as a PH." FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reported Tuesday that Hairston will sign within the next 24 hours. The 37-year-old slashed a meager .211/.265/.275 over 226 plate appearances with the Dodgers this season.

Jerry Hairston Jr. (back) took batting practice and shagged fly balls in the outfield Tuesday with no issues. Hairston hasn't played since September 25 because of a sore back but appears to be healthy enough for the NLDS. However, he still might not make the roster cut with Michael Young on the roster and the fact that he was 2-for-29 at the plate in September. "We'll see," Mattingly said when asked about Hairston's status for the NLDS. "We're still going over the roster and seeing how everything fits with who we have, don't have, what guys can do, can't do and then trying to put our best club together."

Jerry Hairston Jr. was unavailable to play Thursday due to back spasms. Hairston felt the back issue coming on Wednesday and was unable to work out prior to Thursday's contest. He's considered day-to-day, but the malady isn't good for Hairston's chances at cracking the Dodgers' postseason roster.

Dodgers activated INF/OF Jerry Hairston, Jr. from the 15-day disabled list. The Dodgers have yet to announce the corresponding roster move. Hairston, out since early May with a groin strain and tendinitis in his knee, will make the start in left field Monday night against the Angels. The 36-year-old utility man returns to a .255/.304/.353 batting line over 58 plate appearances this season.

Jerry Hairston Jr. (knee, groin) will begin his minor league rehab assignment with High-A Rancho Cucamonga on Friday. Hairston originally landed on the disabled list with a left groin strain earlier this month, but then had a setback when he tweaked his knee. Barring any setbacks, he should be able to rejoin the Dodgers before the end of the month.

An MRI on Jerry Hairston Jr.'s knee has revealed tendinitis. Hairston is on the DL with a left groin strain, but it appears that the knee might be a bigger issue at the moment. He had been slated to play in an extended spring training game Monday, but it's not clear if that happened. Hairston's timetable is up in the air.

Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said Friday that Jerry Hairston Jr. (knee, groin) had "a little bit of a setback." Hairston was placed on the disabled list earlier this month with a left groin strain, but he's now dealing with knee issues. The setback means that he won't be activated from the DL next week when first eligible. The Dodgers are expected to send him on a brief rehab assignment before he's cleared to return.
