Rival executives have told ESPN's Buster Olney that they believe the Red Sox are "laying the groundwork" for a trade of Jacoby Ellsbury for pitching help.

It backs up a report from the Boston Globe's Pete Abraham, who said the Sox could deal Ellsbury and re-sign Cody Ross. Ellsbury is one of the team's best players when he's healthy, but perhaps the Red Sox don't think he'll be with them beyond 2013 and prefer to trade him now. The Phillies might be a fit with their need for a center fielder and their abundance of pitching.
