Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro, Jr. said Tuesday that he fully intends to pick up Carlos Ruiz's $5 million option for 2013.

"That's a formality," said Amaro. "But we'll wait because we feel that's the right thing to do." Ruiz has enjoyed his best season in the big leagues this year, compiling a .326/.396/.541 batting line to go along with 16 home runs, 68 RBI and a .936 OPS. He has also thrown out a career-best 34 percent of attempted basestealers.
