Rodney was released by the Athletics on Tuesday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
EDGE Analysis
The veteran reliever had been designated for assignment Saturday, so this follow-up move was expected. Rodney's unsightly 9.42 ERA and 2.23 WHIP over 14.1 innings (17 appearances) this season may make securing new employment a rather challenging proposition.

Rodney was designated for assignment by Oakland on Saturday.
EDGE Analysis
The 42-year-old struggled to a 9.42 ERA and a 14:12 K:BB in 14.1 innings for the Athletics this season. Given those poor numbers and his age, there's a chance this is the end of the road for Rodney, but he did record a very playable 3.36 ERA just last season, so it wouldn't be surprising if at least one team takes a chance on him hoping that he still has something left in the tank. Wei-Chung Wang's contract was selected in a corresponding move.

Rodney was charged with a blown save and took a loss after serving up four runs on three hits and a walk while retiring just one batter in the 13th inning Sunday against the Pirates.
EDGE Analysis
Staked with a 3-1 lead entering the bottom half of the 13th, Rodney was summoned for the save chance while regular closer Blake Treinen (elbow) was unavailable. After inducing a groundout from Elias Diaz, Rodney allowed each of the next three batters to reach base before Starling Marte took him deep for a walkoff three-run blast. Rodney's blowup lessens the likelihood that he'll get the next look in a save opportunity, though it may be a moot point anyway with Treinen expressing optimism that his elbow issue won't require a trip to the injured list.

Rodney (0-1) allowed three earned runs on four hits and a wild pitch over two-thirds of an inning in a loss to the Red Sox on Wednesday. He struck out one.
EDGE Analysis
The veteran reliever was called upon to preserve a 3-3 tie in the ninth, but he promptly allowed singles to three of the first four batters he faced. Rodney then uncorked a wild pitch while working against Mookie Betts and subsequently allowed a two-run double to the Red Sox center fielder. Rodney had also given up a pair of earned runs over an inning against the Angels last Friday, but he's generated scoreless outings in his three other appearances thus far.

Rodney was credited with a hold in an exhibition win over the Giants on Tuesday, firing a scoreless third inning in which he allowed no hits but issued a walk.
EDGE Analysis
Rodney kept rolling Monday after putting in a pair of solid appearances during the season-opening series versus the Mariners in Japan. The veteran reliever had fired a combined 1.2 scoreless innings in those outings while allowing one hit and two walks. Rodney proved he still had plenty left in the tank last season at age 41, recording 25 saves and eight holds while generating a 3.36 ERA across 68 appearances with the Twins and Athletics. While Blake Treinen has a firm hold of the closer role in Oakland, Rodney could certainly figure in for the occasional save opportunity in addition to the setup role he's primarily slated to fill.

Rodney (0-1) received the loss in Tuesday's spring game against the Angels as he allowed four runs on four hits and two walks while recording one out.
EDGE Analysis
Rodney was the first pitcher out of the bullpen Tuesday but found little luck with his lone plus being a strikeout. The 41-year-old is coming off an up-and-down season in which he posted a 3.36 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 70:32 K:BB over 64.1 innings between the Twins and Athletics.

The A's exercised Rodney's $4.25 million club option for 2019 on Wednesday.
EDGE Analysis
Rodney opened the 2018 season with Minnesota before being dealt to Oakland in August. Overall, the veteran reliever posted a combined 3.36 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 9.8 K/9 across 64.1 innings of relief. He also registered 25 saves and seven holds. With Blake Treinen expected to reprise his role as the team's closer in 2019, Rodney figures to settle in as one of Oakland's primary setup men.

Rodney was traded from the Twins to the Athletics on Thursday in exchange for Dakota Chalmers.
EDGE Analysis
Rodney served as Minnesota's closer prior to the deal, as he managed to record 25 saves with a 3.09 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 50 strikeouts over 43.2 innings, although he failed to convert on six save opportunities. The Athletics already have a solid closer in Blake Treinen, so Rodney figures to bolster the A's bullpen as he'll likely see plenty of high leverage situations with the occasional chance for a save when Treinen is unavailable.

Rodney struck out a pair while working around a hit in a scoreless inning of work to earn his 25th save of the season Tuesday against the Indians.
EDGE Analysis
Rodney allowed the tying run to reach base to lead off the inning, but he responded by retiring the next three he faced to close out the victory. He threw 11 of 17 pitches for strikes and recorded multiple punchouts for the third time in his last six appearances. Rodney's ERA is down to 3.09 for the season, but his 1.40 WHIP indicates that he could still run into some bumpy outings from time to time. That said, his 25 saves rank fifth among American League closers.

Rodney worked around two hits and a walk with one strikeout in a scoreless inning of work to earn his 24th save of the season Sunday against the Royals.
EDGE Analysis
Working with a one-run lead, Rodney allowed the first man he faced to reach. Fortunately he was caught stealing soon after, because the veteran dangerously allowed two more men to reach before recording the final out. It hasn't been pretty all year for Rodney, who owns a 1.41 WHIP to go along with his 3.16 ERA, but he continues to get the call in save situations and could see plenty more if he remains with Minnesota through the end of the season.
